A question about fumaric acid

Migrated topic.

Hello fellow wanderers , its been a long time since i posted. Hope you guys are good , healthy and in love.

I have some fumaric acid that a bought and it has an expiration date. I still need to do some works with it but it expires shortly.

So i was thinking , should i put the acid in the freezer to keep it good for for some more time ??
Also what would happen if acid expires , would it become weaker or what ??

Thank you guys for reading this and for your time.
Work you doing here is priceless.

Everybody be well always !!!!!!!!!!! 😁

Your fumaric acid will be fine if you store it in a closed jar. I bet it will still be fine in a hundred years. The expiration date is either some braindead legal requirement or a sales ploy. Table salt also has an expiry date.

Greetings wonderful people!! 🙏🏼

Bumping my old post just to get some opinions. I know pitubo is The Man, but my fumaric acid is approaching a decade after expiration date...😁 It was stored in a closed jar in a closet all those years. Personally looking fine to me, but im not any kind of specialist by any means.

What do you guys think, should i throw it away and get a new batch, or is there any method to check if it is still good?

Thanks for taking your time and reading dear ones🏵️

Blessings and be well always🌞IMG_20241129_102549.jpg

Hey, great to see you here!

The expiry date is largely irrelevant as previously stated, although it does exist for a reason. If this was naturally derived fumaric acid, it would have a trace carbon-14 content which would slowly decay, lowering the purity ever so slightly. This does not apply to petrochemically-derived materials however - crude oil is far too old to have an appreciable ¹⁴C content.

Cosmic rays and other natural radioactivity can generally be discounted as a cause of decomposition, unless you're planning on storing your material for a million years, or maybe in a uranium glass container

However, there may be a significant diffusion of plasticisers from the container it's in at the moment, although this will be slowed down by freezer storage.

One other thing that ionising radiation and cosmic rays may do is causing the slow isomerisation of fumaric to maleic acid. I don't know if this effect has been specifically measured. Maleic acid will accumulate, albeit exceedingly slowly, as it is thermodynamically a tiny bit more stable than fumaric.

On balance, all these effects are of negligible impact, but you may want to store the stuff in a glass jar instead, and maybe look into recrystallising it if you're particularly bothered by the thought of nanogram traces of plasticisers.

Transform hi !!!🏵️

Such a cool info, thanks for taking your time and answering in such details, i really appreciate it 🙏🏼

May i ask you how should i perform a proper recrystallization, is there any filtering stage in it?

Once again, big thanks

Kind regards

Fumaric acid has a pretty low solubility in many solvents which is sort of an advantage as much as a disadvantage; @Samvidbuho did something of a study into this somewhere around here, maybe a year or two ago.

The main thing would be to find a solvent, or mixture of solvents, in which the FA has an appreciably higher solubility at higher temperatures and virtually no solubility at freezer temperatures. I'd be scouring the data and literature for as many temperature/solubility curves for FA in various solvents as possible.

There is also the rather important question of whether the solvents you're using will be of a high enough purity grade to make the whole process worthwhile. An insight into the purity level of your FA, in the form of an analysis, would be crucial in making this decision.

I see, and wow, it's not as simple as i was imagining 😲

Transform, thanks a bunch for taking your time and posting. I guess i must decide if i should work with the FA i have, or acquire a newer batch 😆🏵️

See you around bud
Gotta love people who know their stuff🤝🏼

Peace and love
