I have always believed that one of the many things that psychedelics do is to hijack our cognitive pattern and shape recognition functions and create a sort of enhanced pareidolia (the recognizing of shapes and patterns in randomness - such as seeing faces or angels or elephants in clouds) - an exaggeration, or perhaps perversion, of an evolutionarily advantageous trait - to discern your enemy or your prey's features hidden in foliage or otherwise camouflaged in its surroundings.
