You can make a great working pipe out of an apple just jab a couple holes into it with a bic pen in the appropriate places. Poke holes through tin foil with a tack for a screen and mix your "spice" with some sort of kitchen herb like oregano and smoke it with matches or a lighter. 

Don't worry about over heating it. I apply the lighter directly to the "spice" infused herb and burn it like a condemned house and It works perfectly (no hit or miss just hit)
