I have a small glass bong that has a glass bowl, which has served me very well.

The leaf i use for the bed is always ganja as its all I’ve used so far :d

IMHO Its really quite easy to get the technique down. Just melt your spice first into the bottom bed of leaf and then put the top layer of leaf on. Now hover a decent flame above the bowl. The odd pull into the bowl does no harm and if you are like me the ringing in the ears will start very shortly..
