However if the company is unwilling to accept a credit card payment from me, then they are likely to not accept payment from an intermediary company which is accepting my credit card as payment (?..).

To be honest their attitude is quite infuriating and unjustified in my view....

I'm right in thinking that the site you advised doesn't require me to be in the UK or to hold a specific debit/credit card account with them, correct? I just provide my credit card details and they make the payment, similar to paypal?
