Yeah, the bong/bulb combo is quite effective with a delicate touch and a torch lighter.  I started out with that setup myself and had many an ass gripping breakthrough.  But don't disregard the GVG until you've tried it out.  There is without question a learning curve, but in my ever so humble opinion it's the absolute spicy gold standard.
