Hello! This summer i have to write an extended essay (research) in chemistry for my ib course. I have decided to determine caffeine concentration in different strains of green tea. What would be the best organic solvent for extracting caffeine? Are there any other alkaloids in green tea?

SWIM has been doing caffeine extractions fro green tea it in the past; DCM is what you need.

Edit: n-butanol or isobutanol will also work but they give a far more impure pruduct. Not good snortable caffeine.

caffine od's are not fun - swim used to drink strong coffee by the litre - one day it got a bit much - swim was twittering and jittering like a loony pupae - swim now enjoys green tea :)

Correct. I should have mentioned it. SWIM however finds caffeine OD funny. Weird but enjoyable. He understands that it can feel unsettling for some people though.

Better though, buy it yourself from the internet. ebay has insanely cheap prices. All the caffeine extracted from coffee and tea is sold here and there.

SWIM believes that it's not really worth the effort to extract unless one is an extraction enthusiast. It's very easy to find pure and food grade.

u didn't get me, th aim of my experiment is to determine conc. of caffeine in different strains of green tea, i dont need the caffeine itself. however the idea of snorting it sounds interesting :D
