Calcium Hydroxide (Lime) and Acetone

Migrated topic.

Hi folks,

I looked and looked but I could not find a definite answer.

Is there an undesirable reaction from pulling Acetone through Calcium Hydroxide basified ACRB? "downwardsfromzero" mentioned a condensation reaction.

The only information I could find was that Acetone and Calcium Hydroxide can act together to form Diacetone Alcohol. (LINK)

What is your guys' experience with this combination? Will my evaporated pulls be toxic in some way?

The user "modern" suggested chilling Acetone used with Calcium Hydroxide to precipitate out any suspended Calcium Hydroxide.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

You'll probably be fine, as long as you don't reflux your mixture for 4 days :)

In the OrgSyn prep, it seems the soxhlet is used to reduce contact time between the diacetone alcohol and the hydroxide in order to minimise the reverse reaction which re-forms acetone.

ColoredZebra, hope you're having a lovely vibrant day.

I'm not an expert on this combination but I did perform extractions of Phalaris species
and Acacia Simplex with calcium hydroxide/acetone.

I can say the Phalaris extracts, even after defatting were chunky yellow and could have had
Calcium Hydroxide in it. The Acacia extract came out as a red goo seemingly with no solvent or base.
I smoked both, the Phalaris was harsher. It was really hit or miss on activity.
Could you do a wash on the final extract to remove impurities?
I'll go through my notes and maybe can transcribe a bioassay on here.
Hope that helps. This is the first time I've heard of this reaction between calcium hydroxide/acetone.
Will have to look into that. Thanks for the heads up.
