Canadian sources of naptha?

Migrated topic.

It has been a while since I have extracted and when I went to Canadian tire to buy my regular naptha, ESCORT brand, I was dismayed to learn they do not carry it anymore. They now carry only Coleman's which evaps blue, so I did a little research and the only naptha I could find (if it IS even naptha) was this:

MSR SuperFuel White Gas | MEC

Anyone familiar with this?

I might have to buy it, evap it and try it...

Any other suggestions for sources of pure (ish) additive-less Naptha in Canada, preferably Quebec or Montreal, would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

JBArk

I've had success with ronsonol lighter fluid. It evaps clean. Canadian Tire should carry big yellow bottles of it.

Ronsonol lighter fluid from canadian tire did not evap clean for me, nor did the Recochem brand naphtha, fwiw.

I've done three extractions, all using Ronsonol, and it's evaporated cleanly for me each time (2 diff. bottles). I've gotten clean, powerful crystals every time. At least that's been my experience with it. I'd recommend it, though definitely do an evap test for yourself to make sure.

the MSDS says it is 95-100% "light hydrotreated distillate"

which.. appears to be naphtha

Thanks Parshvik Chintan. The superfuel looks good, but coleman's (the second link you provided), unless they have changed their formula, evaps leaving a thin blue film which I have been told is an anti-rust additive.

If I go with the superfuel i will so an evap test and cross my fingers.

JBark- have you considered visiting a craftshop where you can buy artists materials like paints, canvasses, brushes etc? I found some paintbrush cleaner which was naptha and had as one of its selling points the fact that it would evaporate cleanly mentioned on the label. I guess this would be like the VMP naptha that Vovin used in his tek. Might be worth a look should you have such a shop nearby.

Well I've got a bottle to burn so to speak .. so I'll evap the whole thing and see what's there. A splash on clean glass leaves a faint and translucent film in the shape of the original puddle that seems to remain indefinitely (or at least overnight, from my initial test).

My Ronsonol bottle from canadian tire has two CAS#s: 68410-97-9 & 64742-49-0

For CAS 64742-49-0 I found a ronsonol fuel data sheet with the following info (edit:also sorry I named the pdf wrong and don't know how to fix it):
Initial boiling point: 95degC
Residue on evap: 10mg/100mL (max)

If that's true, it definitely leaves sludge in the final product unless you're heating and vacuuming it off.

Then again, its basically impossible to track down a specific data sheet for consumer chemical products that's up to date. So who knows.:?

Also JBark, Michael's sells bestine ($30/473ml). Ridiculous when normally priced, but I picked up a bunch over the holidays for 40% off. If you reuse it, you don't really need a whole lot anyways right?

I found bestine at an art store on Rue St. Catherine.

Yeah, I know the place. I use Bestine for Re-x and not for pulling - it's 18 bucks plus tx for 473ml as compared to 12.95 for nearly 4 litres... And it's rare, even at that art shop - they had 2 bottles last time I was there. They are actually selling it illegally - it has no french on the label, so it has been pulled from the shelves all over Quebec...

And corpus callosum, same idea. I May be able to find some bottles of something here or there in an arts store, but it's definitely not the way to keep costs down!

Thanks guys, I may have found a solution or two. Looking into them. If anyone has any other ideas though, keep 'em comin'!

Read this after I posted above - I guess Bestine has gone up in price!! As stated though, not available legally in Quebec unless they have added french to their label since I last checked. i ordinarily would'nt need a lot, but I am showing 6 friends how to extract and I am starting with a batch of 400G MHRB, and I like to do all my pulls, evap a little then freeze precip all at once, which means I initially need about 1L of NPS, which if I used bestine (assuming I could find it, and find 3 bottles!) would be about 90 bucks with some leftover...

Cheers,

Sherwin Williams sells naphtha. Might need a gst number to set up an account with them. I haven't tried it .. but maybe I should next time 8)

MSDS says 100% volatile VM&P naphtha.

Escort is still around, try looking in other hardware stores like ace or home hardware. Picked some up the other day

Hmmm... good idea - I'll check Ace. There's one a stone's throw from me!

i just use Ronsonol

There are two CAS#s
68410-97-9
64742-49-0

i know that Ronsonol was bought out by zippo sometime ago, maybe thats why it has two CAS #s?

you can find the current MSDS at zippos website

i think the one you posted is from 2010, while this one is 2013

here is the other one MSDS

68410-97-9

and for bestine, i order two cans online, with 20 bucks shipping, and its still cheaper than one bottle at micheals are store!
