clean suspected plastic from end product

I've been helping a friend with his first extraction and he made a bit of a mistake. I told him to get a wine bottle because they are a good shape for decanting. The bottle of wine he used had some plastic or rubber lining on the inside of the cap which upon inspection has severely degraded. I was looking at his DMT in the jar post freeze precipitation and it looked normal enough. I then dissolved it in 91% IPA and a considerable amount of clearish white plastic looking stuff didn't go into solution. I ran the IPA through the a coffee filter to remove the solids and it is evaporating now.

Should a IPA wash have been sufficient to have gotten the contaminants out?

Yeah, I had come across that post during a search. I just question how much cleaner a recrystallization would get it than doing it the way I did since it was obviously soluble in my NPS in the first place. I just hope what I filtered out was all there is.

If the plastic is soluble in the NPS of choice, I imagine it would stay in the solvent during a recrystallization.

Uncertainty about contamination could potentially affect the experience in a not-so-desirable way. Although recrystallizing would most likely work, a mini-A/B would be the most effective means of cleaning plastic contamination. It may seem like a lot of work, but it really is a small price to pay for peace of mind while entering hyperspace

First of all just dont work with plastic next time. That being said, if I wanted to clean some suspected plastic off my product, I`d dissolve the freebase in acetone, add FASA, collect the precipitates after a couple of days, wash them with cold dry acetone, and then reconvert back to freebase using the slow water crystallization method described in BLAB tek.

The plastic or plasticizers would very probably stay dissolved in the acetone when the fumarates precipitate after adding FASA. The acetone wash will not dissolve fumarates and will help making sure the traces of plastic are removed. The water freebase crystallization step would be an extra step making sure you`re cleaning it off any more polar plasticizers that might have come across...

Agreed, this would probably be the most guaranteed method to remove plastic.

A mini-A/B would probably be almost as effective, but still slightly less so. Adding a re-x or two at the end would probably be plenty thorough. The benefit of this method would be that a person performing an extraction already has all of the required materials on hand.

Find out what kind of plastic was used check its chemical resistance guide and then use a solvent in which it will not dissolve to clean your product by dissolving it letting the plastic settle out then filtering.

I'd hedge a bet ethanol or ISO would be good bets as wine bottle is exposed to alcohol.

If you suspect plastic contamination I would redissolve in non polar solvent and extract with an acid, the plastic would stay in the solvent and the DMT would go be salted into the acid solution, then just re-base and extract with clean non polar solvent.

The most involved but most thorough method for sure. I suggested a easy option in my previous post that would help reduce any contaminants but this will remove more if done carefully.
