cleaning DCM w/o distilation.

Migrated topic.
kleenstrip dcm seems to have MeOH and stoddard solvent as the additives. would i not just add the can of stripper to dH2O in a sep funnel. MeOH would go into the water, dcm would fall, pet dist would float.

Well first it depends how much of the other solvents are there. But often chloroform and DCM have ethanol added to them as a stabilizer (about 1%). In order to remove the ethanol you can partition the solvent against water a few times. Then dry over magnesium or sodium sulfate. DCM and chloroform both dissolve small amounts of water so thats why the drying step is important. but thats only if you want it to be very pure.

im guessing this only works with the plastic cement kind and not the goo/paste crap that i can actually source locally?

^^I do not understand what you are referring to?
There are some DCM-based solvents that come mixed with methanol but they also have other ingredients that make it to a goo/gel consistency. SWIM once got fooled and got a can of this stuff. It is hard to do anything with this, but its' worth trying the water partitioning.

infb is correct. there is a plastic welding poduct that is dcm, but its like 12usd/oz. theres also 1gal cans of >60%dcm at the hardware store for 17$, but they are made viscous so you can actually remove paint with it.

its very common to distill the stuff from the goo but i dont want to run that in my fragile homemade dist apparatus. ill look into a cheaper brand of plastic glue.

does anyone know brands of this that are acceptable? i know at least 1 sold at many hobby stores is 98%dcm. ill put together a list of locally available glues and look up the msds anyway.

on a funny note, at work today the head of the bakery division was excited because after 4 weeks of waiting he FINALLY got his 1gal jug of d-limo for flavoring. wonder why it took him solong to get something we can source in a week lol. they had bought a gal of alcohol/orange extract(whatever that is) and used it instead. if this unneeded limo gets somuch as a light coatign of dust on it i might have to put it to better use(we have probably 5 tonnes of unneeded product between the 4 departments. i found 10gal of pure anise oil from 2001! never even took the plastic wrap off, just hid it with a qrtr inch of dust. too bad the shits only good for pma....
