Cleaning Up Spilled Lye

Migrated topic.
Vinegar works fine. It will bring the pH down to safe levels. I use white vinegar. And wear gloves and goggles. I've gotten some strong base on gloves, which could have been my hands.

Lye is so dangerous especially if its wet. The last thing you want is to get any in your eyes!!!

SWIM never uses lye anymore. He's switched completely over to using sodium carbonate, calcium hydroxide, and ammonium hydroxide. They are so much safer than lye.

Are sodium carbonate, Calcium Hydroxide and Xylene all available at a local hardware store?

Come to think of it, I may have read that sodium carbonate is made from heating baking soda.

But the latter 2, are they easily found?

SWIM wants to try FASA and is wondering if Xylene is better than Toluene.

Ammonium Hydroxide is just your typical "ammonia" (Janitorial strength is much stronger). Calcium hydroxide I believe can be made by heating seashells (or maybe that would produce Calcium Oxide...which when put in water will produce Calcium hydroxide).
