DIY vacuum filtration and re-X'ing adventures

Now I got back a few hours ago - opened the freezer (I hadn't been home in a week), and pull out 2 jars - one dirty one not - both with good amount of snow globes around the glass and in the solvent.

I now have coffee filters, shake the jars up for a few seconds to dislodge some of the spice, then pour it in the coffee filter which is in a tall glass, and leave it in the fridge to drip.

When it's finished and there's plenty of plae yellow wet material - I squeeze it a lil, and then I put in my DIY filtration contraption...and in some ways it was a big succes...especially considering all I used was a cut off water bottle, a coffee filter, and a vacuum cleaner - I see how it goes from SOAKING to getting drier, to almost dry - I can see shining and it's dropping off the filter when I move it.

Only problem was I used ONE coffee filter, and it ripped - sending about half a gram of spice UP my hoover.

Lesson learned - use 2 filters!!

But I know it's really simple...SO I can see things going very well from now on - very fast drying of the spice, no fucking about waiting days for it to dry, so then I can recrystallize it much quicker too. MMMMMMM LOVE IT. Still got maybe quarter of a gram I'm drying, maybe more, so it's not a complete bust - it's only drugs.

Next time I do this, probably sunday or monday - I'll use 2, and I'll post the setup and my results.

I now have a pair of scales again, which are accurate to 50 X 0.01 - which is fine by me - I don't want milligram scales at the moment - it's not a priority 0 up til now I been content eyeballing all my DMT doses, and weighing some out when I want to know what I yielded, after my first 2 extractions.

From a kilo I have managed to make about 6 or 7 grams - so that's fine by me for now, til I brush up my techniques.

I'm curious as to what your DIY filtration contraption might be and its design.

I use a 40 micron fritted funnel with a 250ml vacuum flask. It works perfectly and there's no paper filter to deal with.

Oh, and I have the hose going to a foodsaver as the vacuum source.

You could put the coffeefilter in a bottleneck, this way it is supported and wont rip so easily...

(just cut a HDPE bottle in two and use the bottleneck up-side-down, put the filter in there, and somehow fit/tape the whole thing nice and thightly to your source of vacuum.)

^ that is EXACTLY what I did. ALthough now you mention it, HDPE would be better yes.

I tried again today, and 2 works pretty well, but the outside one STILL ripped. I think I need to make sure that I don't cover the top next time - it created TOO much vacuum.

ALl part of the learning curve, and Mysmelf - I don't have access to any fancy equipment at the mo, and even if I did I have no money, so am learning how to do things the innovative way - which is quite fun.

Obviously in years to come, I will be prefecting and getting better, but this is all just for my consumption, so I don't really mind a bit of wasteage to start off with.

How do you not deal with paper? I figured you'd still use a paper filter over a fritted flask, and that the fritted aspect just distributed the vacuum pressure more evenly so you don't get clogs?

I've tried it with and without paper filters and haven't noticed any real difference. If the spice isn't real white, it tends to stick to the paper more.

The fritted funnel was the most expensive at about $30 or $40 bucks and I already had a Foodsaver. Flasks and beakers are fairly cheap from most lab supply stores.

If the filter still rips, you can stuff the opening (of the bottleneck) with some cotton. This way the filter is completely supported. Ofc you could (also) decrease the strength of the vacuum somewhat by making holes in the tubing somewhere.

MM yes I thought about putting a sock in the bottle neck to relieve some of the pressure... too late but lesson learned - will be drying a fair bit more in the next 2 days - so will try it out - I can't wait - I'm then going to post up my full results from a single extraction with all the pulls AND post pics of my pile(s) - possily different grades, not had the orange earwax grade in aaages - that stuff is my favourite actually :)

Aaaaand I perfected my DIY vacuum filtration technique (used a sock and 3 paper coffee filters), and BOM SHIVA(!) I have what looks like fishscale cocaine in my coffee filter - just poured it out onto my crystal dish, as seems it's not going to get any drier using that apparatus, will chop it up - it's completely non-tinted, shiny white crystal CAKE!!!

MMmmm...This is my best STB so far - used the 4th pull (evapped for a week) from my last extraction as part of the solvent for my 3rd pull on my last extraction of the kilo.

The filtered solvent has gone back in the freezer in a new jar, and the previous one is upside down in the freezer.

My god this is beautiful, major turning point in my skills - this all happened coz I did all the pulls in one session, instead of over the period of a week - take time to do it newbies, I will say it maes it a HELLOFALOT easier to not draw fats and oils.

That is all.

Will not be posting pics unfortunately as I have no camera, but will be able to take a pic of the finished product, all chopped and dried on my scale, hopefully on the weekend.

You gave me an idea : I vacuum filtered a pull before putting it into the freezer, and as a result the dmt was as white as what i used to
get with an A/B ! :)

What I don't understand is where is the solvent going?

when you vacuum filter are you actually sucking up the naptha into the tank of the vacuum?

My understanding of the OP is that he basically used the vacuum to speed up the evaporation process(is this correct?)

When vacuum filtering before putting the pull into the freezer, are you using a wet/dry vac with a clean container to filter the naptha then pour naptha into jar and place in freezer?

I think I must be missing something here, but I don't know what...

Yes, I know this has nothing to do with what jblazingnataraja is doing, he just gave me an idea!

I used a classic vacuum filtration setup like this one :

And once all the naphta was filtered I freeze precipitated it.

wuuut ^?!?!?

Why would you filter it like that BEFORE freezer precipitating it?? that doesn't make any sense to me, as surely it's still in solution, and the process of freezing is what crashes the DMT out of the solvent solution...

Here's my final product -all in all I got 1g from 140g MHRB off this last extraction.

A couple of my best crystals there in the second picture - after recrystallizing using Zippo lighter fluid.

I was going to say I'd post a pic of vaccum apparatus but it's really simple - a cutoff plastic bottle, a vacuum cleaner, 3 coffee filters, and a sock.

PEACE!!

Well, it seems that filtering it before freeze precip. removes all the base gunk/particles and is a good alternative to sodium carb. wash.

Oohhhh my crystal on the lefthand sideofthe 2nd pic has started turning yellow after 3 weeks of being in the open air - it looks well cool - I'll try N take a pic this week.

Seriously it makes the whole process SO much quicker after freeze precipitation.

I use heavy naptha during the extraction, so it draws more DMT into it when performing the pulls (someone gave me that tip...need to research why it does this sometime - brush up on the chemistry dynamics there), but it takes FOREVER to evap.

Lighter petroleum distillates are really good for evapping, haven't looked for Bestine here yet.
