DMT Cart causing headaches? Solvent still present? What are some warning signs of solvent in vape juice?

Hey guys,

Sorry if this is in the wrong thread, my first post after a successful extraction.

After my first extraction (Straight to base room temp extract using this video:
).

I realized my bark was harvested in winter, so there was less dmt content (bummer).

I had left the goo for 4 or so hours with a fan blowing over the top, and a day outside covered with paper towel after pouring off excess to evap any excess solvent, but realised I didn't cut and move the dmt in-between, probably leaving behind trapped solvent.

I used .25ml yellow dmt goo with .25ml PG in a cart. It was across a few jars and dishes, which I scraped all up, (was oily/waxy) combined into a small glass container, and then heated up until it melted. before combining with the PG. There also was a few red crystals which wouldn't melt which I was confused about.

I hit the vape a few times with small draws at 2.7v (not enough for visuals), and was surprised at the headache. There was no burn in the back of my throat or mouth, just slight numbness on the lips and mouth. There was a distinct smell of mothballs, but wasnt sure if this was the dmt or the solvent.

I ended up draining the cart, adding more warm solvent/distilled water and pulling off the top layer to re evap.

Was I overreacting? How can you tell when dmt goo is free from any solvent? Is there any indicators of solvent still in DMT?

Thanks and kind regards,

The mothball smell is from DMT, more or less. It's not clear which solvent you used (I haven't looked at the video - I'm not logging in to yt for that) but would it be correct to guess it was naphtha? Did you freeze precipitate to get your product?

The amount of solvent residue in each vape hit is likely to be insignificant anyhow, but you can reduce the content of potential unwanted volatiles by dissolving everything in acetone or ethanol and allowing it to evaporate back to goo in a shallow layer. Cover with tights/panty hose to keep out the dust.

It's not unheard of for serotonergic tryptamines to cause headaches in a small number of people.

Welcome to the Nexus, too!

Thank you for your welcome and reply!

I used the following solvent:

Diggers Wax and Grease Remover

I freeze participated.

I ended up doing some more pulls, with some more bark, transferring the naptha leftover back into the bark soup, warming the flask and solution, and re-adding the now warm naptha back to the freezer dishes before putting them in the fridge overnight, and then transferring to the freezer.

Now I'm left with yellow wax and goo crystals in one dish, red goo clump in another (i scrapped the bottom layer with a glass pipette and it collected as red goo), and tiny, slightly yellowish-white crystals in the third.

I don't mind an impure product, but I'm concerned as I didn't wash the naptha before freeze participation.

I've included photos for reference. The jar has some residue that wouldn't dissolve when I put it in a warm water bath, and not sure if it's stubborn dmt or some contaminants I may have introduced when cleaning the glass pipette with tap water.

Watch out for that degreaser, with up to 20% hexane it could cause neurotoxicity issues.

The pics look like perfectly respectable acacia goo.

Avoid using tap water for anything in direct contact with your extraction. That's not to say it's responsible for the insoluble residue, since I've heard of this happening with acacia before.
Thankyou!

Bummer about the solvent, I did an evap test and there wasn't anything left behind. Gonna have to try find better Naptha in aus somehow for a reasonable price.

There's also Digger Shelite which has the following:

Regarding the neuro toxicity issues, so if I vaped the goo after thoroughly evaporating do you expect that there wouldn't be any hexane present? Otherwise I could do a wash with ethanol I would assume.

Yeah, the hexane should evaporate readily, although you can't guarantee some's not trapped in the goo matrix without redissolving everything in a hexane-free solvent and, depending on the solvent, either evaporating or free-precipitating a couple of times.

Please ensure you keep your exposure to hexane vapours to an absolute minimum!
What are some safer solvents that you would recommend to use in this instance?

Have occasionally been breathing in the fumes but try to keep the area well ventilated.
