Hey Now Gamereaper,
There are two schools of thought about this issue. Traditionally, a teacher-student relationship is recommended. The time honored master-disciple thing. Ultimately, we ourselves must allow understanding to dawn, on our own. We choose to believe we need the guidance of an instructor, when we are in essence, the instructor. Still, we like to dance and have a human need for transmissions from one entity to another. Passing the torch, as it were.
Like yourself, I always push the limits. I have learned to temper this inclination and surrender to a more slow n' steady path towards the One. Too much of a good thing is a bad thing. This can be fool-hearty and quite dangerous, as many of our Nexian family members warn. So, being forewarned can be a valuable message to receive. That being said, when the seeker is hungry enough to taste the nectar of the Eternal... self obliteration and ego death are sacrificed without a second thought. Perhaps this is one reason that shamans are referred to as wounded healers? Like moths driven into the flame, the psychonaut willingly embraces the death of subjectivity and the realm of the known, to experience the other side. Amazingly enough, this willingness for the obliteration of self creates a vacuum, in which the absence of thought opens an avenue for eclipsing with the Omniself. And in so doing, consciously and exponentially, become attuned to the whole. As Timothy Leary was fond of saying, "You have to loose yourself to find yourself."
I am strongly in favor of self discovery and spontaneous enlightenment. Granted, with the aid of psychedelic teachers, we arrive at far more intense degree transformation, within the roller-coaster of the realization of the nature of our awareness. The "teacher" ideally facilitates a spike in the learning curve. I personally feel that we must never forget that
we are the actual teachers and that the truths we seek are already the primary components of our most innate self. We simply allow ourselves to remember the universal essence of our true nature. Our original face, as the Zen Buddhists put it.
Still, there are helpful plants, books, ideologies and thought forms which aid in this awakening. As with all teachings and techniques of consciousness altering, the sate of being we quest for, through methodologies and investigation, arrive full circle, to what is already inherent within our core being. It has been suggested that all forms of life within this universe are manifestations of God's efforts to know Godself. The Void's paradoxical dance of hide and seek? How then, is it any different for you and I? We are becoming that which we have always been, eh? 8)
