I've never used cuttings, but as far as I'm aware one foot seems to be a good starting point to get the feel.  There was an experience report put up recently in the cactus section where the guy took 3 foot.  It depends too on the thickness of the cuttings obviously, and the potency.  Everyone says cactus is very forgiving however!  Is it a first time?
