Drytek on rue

Apologies if this has been answered elsewhere but my searches are not pulling up anything useful.

I am wondering why a simple drytek on rue seeds might not work. I've seen people post about doing stb extractions on rue, but haven't found any actual tek about it, just the usual acid boil, filter, etc... teks.

if i followed the q21q21 tek on rue and then performed a manske on the final back-salted solution, what complications might i encounter ?

I ask because cooking and filtering sound like unnecessary extra work if the drytek approach actually works.

so procedure would be:

acidify ground rue seeds
base with calcium hydroxide
pull with nps
salt nps with vinegar
reduce vinegar
saturate solution with salt
put in fridge
filter and collect solids
 
I don't think harmalas will pull into a non polar solvent like that.

I had good success grinding the rue and basing with calcium hydroxide then pulling into ethanol and evapping onto plant material for a simple dirty full spectrum freebase smoking blend, it was actually quite tasty and effective.

You could probably do something similar to what you outlined just using a polar solvent.
grind the rue
base drytek style
pull into ethanol/ipa/acetone
evap
dissolve extract in vinegar-water
manske and/or base and collect the precipitates
 
What dreamer said. Forget using a NPS when working with rue, it won't pull anything.

Imo, yields will suffer considerably going the route suggested by dreamer, compared to a traditional A/B. However, his suggested method will likely work infinitely better than the initial proposition.

If you really wanted to go drytek for rue, I would suggest doing what dreamer suggested, but starting with a resin. So...

Boil seeds several times
Reduce water/evap til resin is dry
Grind resin
base drytek style
pull with ethanol/ipa/acetone
evap
dissolve extract in vinegar-water
manske and/or base and collect the precipitates

In the end, it will probably be more efficient to go liquid-liquid A/B...you just have to be patient for filtering (and consider looking into a vacuum filtration setup).
 
As others said, there simply isn't a good enough nps or other solvent to efficiently pull freebased harmalas.. I've tried many, and the best is dcm which is not that great either
 
Thanks guys. I suppose the question originated from my misunderstanding that all freebased compounds would pull in some kind of NPS. What determines whether a freebase compound dissolves in a polar or non polar solvent?

I've been doing the simple acid boil + manske, which yields a dirty salty harmala extract, but never pushed for purity because all the filtering is such a hassle. Maybe I will try the tao of rue method next.

Any ideas on how to remove excess salt from an extract? My current extract is extremely salty and I am trying to think of a way to convert it to a pure freebase so I can use for changa

Dissolve your extract into some warm vinegar and then base with a lye solution. By the time you rinse the lye away, you'll be left with a relatively salt free extract. Refer to 6 Remove Excess NaOH, Salts, Etc. of Gibran2's Easy Caapi Vine Alkaloid Extraction Guide for more info on how to wash the lye away properly.

Reading Gibran's whole tek as well as the Tao and the teks listed in the Tao will give you a much better understanding of how harmalas react in different conditions. It's a really fun process aside from the filtering.
 
Thanks Mel, I hadn't seen gibran's tek yet so will give this a try. Is it essential to use Lye as the initial base or would sodium carbonate suffice ?
 
I always recommended lye because of this post from Endlessness, he brought up concerns that using sodium carbonate instead of lye can reduce yields. But after reading his (updated) post again, it shows that isn't as much of an issue as initially thought.

I do prefer lye because it seems to make for a cleaner extraction process as the sodium carbonate tends to clump up the harmalas sometimes. With plenty of washing as outlined in Gibran's tek, the lye gets washed away and shouldn't be an issue.
