freezing then heating

Migrated topic.

Spock's Brain

Rising Star
swim performed a successful A/b ext. On swim second attempt, swim plans on first freezing and then thawing several times the ground up rb in plain water upon the theory of bursting the cells containing the substance to increase yields, before puting in the acid bath. good idea? swim is wondering if after immersion in the acid bath if swim should heat the acidified solution and to what temperature, to further yields? swim heard that once the solution is basified the substance will vaporize if heated to much. But is it safe and benevolent to heat the acidified solution, and will this help the process? should swim cook the acid phase?

Heating the acidified solution seems to be ok. A light simmer is what most people seem to be using. It will help the extraction. I recently noted that 3 cooks does not seem to be enough and that more spice can be pulled from the bark with a 4th and even 5th cook. I cooked one batch for a week with 5 water changes and was still pulling spice from my 5th and last cook.

I am not sure if the freeze/thaw is necessary, but it certainly won't hurt.

thanks swim will heat the acid phase using double 'boiler" method for awhile on each pull and see what happens what a great and responsive place this enlightened forum is...
