The covalent forces binding the methoxy to the benzene ring are too strong. substitution and cyclization to a beta-carboline would occur well before the methoxy even budges.
you might as well demethylate, convert to triflate, then instead of hydrogenolysis with palladium, just do some transition metal coupling chemistry and stick on a trifluoromethylthio (-SCF3) group instead. You run into just as much effort and difficultly converting into that as converting it into -H , believe me. haha. And then at least you'd have a novel DMT molecule on your hands

I mean you could dislike 5 meo and like n,n and want to change your 5 M into n,n...
But 5 meo is very thought after, you could prolly make someone happy with giving it away / trading.
Thing to try is rather go from Mexamine to 5 MeO.
