Salutations,

My activity here been limited to just a few dedicated threads since i created my account (2010-Oct-21), those 3 have survived 14 years later:

Semi-DiY Pulse-Heating transformation (based on VaporGenie Classic/Bronze Sherlock) [2019-May-19]
FogBong! (2024-Sep-17)
Inhalation devices - the antique, vintage, obsolete. Stuff guaranteed not to be currently sold in stores and more... (2024-Dec-6)

One of my early newbie opinions was that we should focus on the best legacies on our sub-culture and accept to only rely on commercially-available 3rd-party ready-to-use products instead of engaging into some steep learning curve pretending to become NASA-grade electronics engineers overnight in semi-DiY scenarios...

So at the time my most ambitious proposal has been to hack an IH Cooker by exploiting its signal plug(s), e.g. while dealing with auto-shutdown in case no suitable workload were detected - via a connector similar to this exactly:

A couple years later my butane-based consumption method would still require over 10 seconds of pre-heating, which exceeded such no-workload window though i had an alternative in mind:

Possibly some disc-shaped device fitting into a stealthy CD-ROM box, or even a glass/ceramic adapter for my Curie effect fry pan, rated T<250 °C (485 °F):

Its cannabic bowl (not shown) would sit above the central collector hole with fresh air being heated to a thermo-static temperature while on the way from 3 side inlets toward that common converging point.

None of those ideas found acceptance when presented on FuckCombustion, quite on the contrary. The failed Loto Labs venture gave another blow to Induction Heat vaporism and i ain't felt more lucky supporting dental wax IH Driver experiments... More years passed then the european device got replace with a cheap asian clone pushed by fanboys of the dynaverse who eventually chose that same hair-pulling agravation i advised against in 2010; as a matter of fact 2 manufacturers recently served warnings to their customer base, one asking NOT to insert their star product inside the company's IH Driver or it would risk getting « BRICKED », the other simply instructing users to activate 1st and drop-in next (never the other way around)! In short the over-simplistic opinion that « it works » finally failed the test of time.

Meanwhile the "community" couldn't avoid getting distracted from our main objective, forgetting that function decides of shape as a result of universal forces applying to the physical universe, for example:

This, my dear cannabis enthousiasts, this is our common goal and the Saint-Gräal will belong to those who find a consumption method & ritual allowing to safely transfer dame Nature's noble molecules into our blood stream. Better yet, we must also insist that it's kept accessible to the masses including persons with a modest revenue, on top of vision-impaired/blind and 1-hand individuals, etc. Which means torching is too dangerous or just repulsive to a significant part of that community, and hence this leaves us with IH Drivers as those are equally powerful in addition to promissing medical-grade applications that require precise dosing concepts, etc., etc.

The challenge never depended on 1 single infividual alone! No matter what, there was going to be other people sharing compatible perspectives, this YouTube member in particular:

How to make 2kW induction heater from old induction cooker great idea DIY induction heater (2022-Jul-15)

He's hacking his IH Cooker by re-shaping its workcoil directly, which i still find significantly involving for the average semi-DiY hobbyists. By chance here's another fine YT sample confirming that function sets shape and this actually reflects in converging visions if one is patient enough:
How to make 2kW induction heater from old induction cooker. Great idea DIY induction heater (2021-Nov-27)

Don't even dare open that thing at all! It's dangerous to play with high voltage and we may have some much safer options anyway, this one in particular:

Considering the astronomical cost of specialized stoner IH Drivers why not get a pair of low-cost IH Drivers (on sale) and cannibalize the 2nd unit to refurbish its ferrite-loaded workcoil?? The electronics can be stored to later serve as spare parts when the 1st device finally dies, after its warranty period is over...

😉

To me there never was a real urge to even attempt to contemplate electronics design and then end up having to chase « ghosts in the machine »! Perhaps the number of turns ain't optimal and/or its ferrite flux-concentrators would become excessive since there's the same inside the working IH Cooktop, and/or we better use a copper tube as illustrated above, etc.

In any case i can't imagine myself spending hundreds of dollars on a solution based on FuckCombustion-born reputations when much simpler alternatives are worth my attention, though what bothers me most is that i couldn't see it so clearly in 2010. Better late than never...

Good day, have fun!!

Update:

14 years later i managed to benefit from a convenient bargain in some local superstore as they were offering an IH cooker for only 60 $ Cdn!

But unlike my 2010 model this new one refuses to generate any induction power without a proper IH-compatible casserole present... So the refurbished 2010 workcoil now proves useless while it doesn't even matter how loaded that is or not.

How could i not play with it anyway! Curiousity made me scan the A.M. radio-frequency at 1st, which showed that i might want to tune in at one of the band's boundaries, either 560 or 1630 KHz where no station would interfere. The lower frequency signal provided stronger audible modulation with contrasted features, here's what i found.

Well, combining together the IH driver and my IH-ready frypan (filled with water) it seems one gets what he pays for, and that's somewhat basic with temperatures settings 60 °C and 120 °C being no good, because either the carrier or silence are never heard respectively: the one available option is 90 °C and that's it.

Once the water got near its target temperature i observe 1 complete On/Off cycle lasting about half a demi minute, with a variable ratio. Nothing like proportional thermostats, just the basic old days 2-states sequence similar to a stove.

A 10 cm flat disk won't suffice anymore, currently i need a ~40 % larger casserole with vertical edges, so much for the epiphany idea based on a glass/ceramic adapter for vaporizers!

Back to square 1, it may become necessary to hack the IH Cooker signals as imagined in 2010 if i must insist over putting a salvaged workcoil on it. Or perhaps i must experiment with different workcoil layouts until one manages to pass the auto-shutdown step triggered by an absence of suitable cookware... Thing is i've moved beyond the era of hair-pulling agravations, maybe after another 14 years some other guy will finally figure out how to build an IH adapter for vaporizers.

Ghosts in the machine have struck again!

Good day, have fun!! ☮️

Salutations!

Here's a situation where it would be most appropriate to include component/model numbers among other technical details, but doing so here would likely get interpreted as SPAM while i'd rather warn NOT to purchase the right-side product version despite the fact that this design got 14 years to evolve:
full

My 2010 experiment about melting solder on a 4" (dia.) disc remains conclusive (if distance to glass surface is kept below a flat toothpick's thickness), just be cautious to make sure vibrations won't make it slide as that's very hot. Be advised that all attempts to INDEPENDENTLY DUPLICATE such experiment using a device identical to the fresh-new 2024 version will fail for these 2 reasons: #1) insufficient disc size; #2) restrictive cookware detection.

In reference to my ancient LAVADisc concept, the booklet appears to suggest a CD caddy might still prove suitable, at it allows some margin of ¾" overall. But in practice expect a disc will need to measure ~5½" or 140 mm (dia.) instead, unless the casing is opened to perform a "hack" - and i can't recommend doing that in a context intended to include large audiences. So either the strategy requires careful selection of an IH brand/model or my convenient stealthy CD/DVD caddy scenario hasn't survived the test of time!

o_O

Looking for an alternative i got both lucky then not so lucky. Already having 1 unit in stock i didn't think of buying a pair of the new "upgrade" IH Cooker and that's actually a blessing! The revised workcoil (illustrated below) comes with with some larger wire gauge, but careless implementation now causes its turns to touch together! Which is bad news thinking the insulation varnish won't protect against electrical stress forever...

Anyway here's a closeup of the beast, possibly manufactured this late September:
full

Notice its 2-layers stack and failure to put real "Litz" wire in it, which ain't no big surprise for a cheap 60 $Cdn deal. We do get what we pay for indeed!

In exchange for such retrograde design "evolution" one could argue that other safety measures improved, if using it to heat a frypan that is. But my plan was to exploit one of these most affordable ready-made commercially available products (even featured with a 5 years warranty!) to inject thermal energy into compatible vaporisers, so this is the configuration i thought of evaluating for Christmass:
full

Just too bad, none of my 2 IH Cookers will accept such workcoils to begin with. These devices "scan" for a proper/compatible workload by generating strong induction bursts easily heard as a click via dynamic earphones located nearby (close to the smaller right-side coil); better yet, if plugged it into the audio input of my cassette recorder then this amplifies the signal which translates as an audible scan signal!

So in conclusion there's no contest. It won't matter which IH workcoil is on top of any similar IH Cooker, it won't respond the same as an IH casserole and that's the end of it once the power injection cycle has cancelled after a failed cookware detection cycle. Or maybe one can still conceive a method to externally defeat that type of safety mechanism, by emulating real IH cookware, e.g. characterised by a virtual signature with similar frequency, phase & amplitude ranges...

Put shortly i see another stimulating challenge arising, this time addressed to radio hobbyists who double as vaporists! Go figure, a few more components added to the workcoil might succeed; so i'm hoping it won't take another 14 years to imagine how an IH Cooking adapter can be implemented to support inhalation of cannabis vapour using one of these convenient/stealthy 60 $ Cdn kitchen appliances and ZERO skills, much less requiring every end user to have electronics knowledge...

Good day, have fun! ☮️
