In a perfect world, it would just be CO2 and water and CO if there's not enough oxygen available, but the reality is that incomplete combustion of hydrocarbons produces all sorts of byproducts; many of which may be detectable by taste--soot for instance.  Bic lighters tend to produce soot, and have the same sort of taste when used on the same devices.
