swim dreams he has either a 50L or a couple of 20L nalgalene carboys within which to process ~4.5kg of prepowdered rootbark.
He knows he can adjust water levels to that his solvent is close enough to the opening to easily pipette out.
He is imagining he will perform a STB tek and has decided he is going to heat the reaction to both speed things up as well as to avoid the need to agitate and roll (though he may do a bit of swirling, and if he can find a stainless steel stirrer big enough, he may use that to do a little agitation).
So he plans on heating the outside of the vessel between 100F-120F. This will be performed outside, in an unheated garage (its kinda cold where swim is- he has seen snow on the ground)
He is looking for input on what would be good to use.
He will set whatever aparatus on top of some insulation to protect from the ground PLUS
So far, he has thought of 2 options:
setting the carboy in a 50 gallon pail, with a couple of fishtank heaters and some water to make a big water bath, though this will only cover the bottom 1/2 to 1/3 of the carboy - with an insulating blanket thrown over the top
or... using an electric heating blanket over the carboy- using extra blankets in between the carboy and the electric blanket if he finds the temperature getting too hot
Swim would closely monitor the setup, specially the first day or so in order to make adjustments, burp the carbouys as needed ( he may use something other then the screwed on cap if too much pressure is building up- perhaps a dish with weight in it secured over the opening, so that fumes can escape... swim will see how things go). Swim would probably lower temperatures when he takes extended time away from the vessel to sleep or what have you.
Hes thinking at least 4 or 5 toluene pulls- or however long it takes till its no longer worthwhile- though with a strong solvent like toluene, prepowedered rootbark and constant heat, he doesnt forsee this lasting past 5 days.
thoughts?
