I cannot help but wonder if Harlan Ellison knew about it when he wrote Croaton in his book Strange Wine.

Did you guys read the whole thing? I love the line that read, "The library also notes that families could buy live baby alligators to take home as pets, which could be brought back after a few years to exchange for a “newer, smaller model.”
