Hey, Im a new guy. I was a member of E-Dot(entheogen.com) until it disintegrated. I usually talked about general chemistry stuff, which is what brings me here today. Im definitely a DMT enthusiast, but i dont personally extract that specifically. I have friends who are generous with it, so i generally work more with other plant extractions. I'm working on one now, and needed a separatory funnel in a pinch. So, ive compiled a short list of easy to obtain hdpe bottles ideal for extraction with most solvents at room temp or below. Im using DCM at the moment, so soda bottles werent going to work. So yeah, if im promoted, thatll be the first order of buisness.

Welcome to the Nexus!

What other plants do you extract?

Do you like to take DMT orally too?

Regarding HDPE, personally I preffer glass, due to potential phthalates and other plasticizers ending up in the final product. Dont you like working with glass?

Be well!

Well if you dont mind drawing it with a turkey baster glass is clearly is the best, but buying a glass separatory funnel is dodgy business. Glassware is often tracked. I wanted a separatory funnel that i could just buy with cash at a store namelessly. And the effect of most chems on hdpe is pretty minimal, they sell hdpe separatory funnels. Methylene chloride is listed as having some effect on hdpe after 7 days of storage at room temp. Im pretty sure drain opener (95% sulfuric acid) is bottled in hdpe. For the purpose of a partition, its ideal, cheap, easy to acquire. It helps that im doing the extraction at a reduced temp too. I mean, i wouldnt expect to store chems in hdpe, but for the short periods of time and chems im working with, im not worried.

No, ive never taken dmt orally, mostly because i havent acquired the rue seeds. I should have some soon though. I'm quite interested in what the more drawn out experience is like, as vaporizing almost dosent give you enough time to delve in to that bizarre introspective hyperspace. Its hard to gleam much from the experience, but it is certainly something

Thanks for wanting to share. Nevertheless, I think you should reconsider a bit your idea of plastic and solvents (or at least have it in mind in your decisions and let others know if sharing info) Please read this thread:

You really think a simple separatory funnel is tracked? Do you have any evidence for that?

Regarding DMT orally, I really recommend, specially if you feel its hard to integrate vaporized dmt due to the speed and "alienness", since oral DMT is slower and more personal. Do you also consider caapi or just rue?

What other psychedelics and extractions are you interested in?

Well if you read the law, it allows any glassware retailer to use their own discretion in reporting "suspicious" orders. Its clear that people who sell lab glass certainly keep records of all items sold/cc#'s etc. so im not exactly enthusiastic about buying one via the internet. If i could pick one up anonymously in town i would be all over it... but as i said, this is not intended as a permanent solution to separations, but to be a better alternative to ziplock bags in a pinch. Ziplock is made from ldpe, which is why it stands up so well, comparatively, against other plastic vessels. Still, ldpe fails in many places where hdpe excels. And considering that id either have to find a glass turkey baster, if such a thing exists, or use a hdpe baster to separate the layers in regular glass, it seems acceptable. After doing an extraction with methylene chloride in hdpe, i was left with 100mg of alkaloids. It didnt look waxy by any means, and certainly not syrupy. I understand that it may not be readily apparent, but if were talking ppm here, then im not very concerned, as most people imbibe these chemicals on a daily basis to some degree. But it should be noted that im not smoking the product - if i were, i would take more precautions.

Im not really interested in all these new synthetic psychedelics for the most part - i like the classic tryptamines. Salvia freaks me right out, and i havent tried any mescaline teas/extracts yet. That is another thing on the to-do list. Haha. Ive worked to varying degrees with salvia, kratom, herb, lagochilus etc - im really learning so i can apply this stuff to newer, less studied plants if i can get the time. I've been interested in obscure plants for awhile - oncidium ceboletta, mitragina spp., salvia spp., calliandra anomola, etc - its what the bulk of my posts on e-dot were about, gathering info on obscure plants from various sources.

Also, from what im reading elsewhere, pthalates are rarely used in the manufacture of hdpe bottles. In all of the FAQ's im reading about them, they all tend to agree that PETE and PVC should be avoided, and LDPE HDPE and PP are the safest, other than fluorinated plastics and glass. Considering how many people use available materials aka pete soda bottles for separatory funnels, my aim is to suggest something better suited and safer.

FAQs are not necessarily good places to check for these things (except the Nexus FAQ :D ). Google scholar, wiley publications, science direct and similar are much better since you get direct scientific publications .

Phthalates are most definitely present in HDPE, LDPE, PP, they all over the place. PP also leeches oleamide.

A couple of examples that talk about how widespread this is.

Several of these chemicals are known to affect the endocrine system and a host of other negative effects, potentially at very small doses. Maybe you dont feel the risk is too much for yourself, which is your legitimate decision since it concerns you only, but all I ask is that if you spread the idea of using plastic as a substitute labware, you make sure to point people out to the relevant information such as the phthalate thread linked in my above post and studies such as the ones I just mentioned, and let them decide for themselves if its worth the risk.

Lastly, regarding buying glass and "reading the law", I most likely live in a different country than you so it's a completely different situation. Personally, even if I couldnt buy a separatory funnel, I would buy a glass syringe or glass pipette or glass turkey baster and use that, working with tall thin containers to help making layers thick and therefore separation easy.

Hope you understand all of this is not meant as an offense but just to bring more information to the topic.

Be well!

Okay, so ive been reading around, and it seems that plasticizers are used with ldpe and hdpe, but only for very specific applications. Its based on this idea:

Glass transition temperature is the temperature at which a polymer changes from a
glassy brittle state to a fluid flexible state. PVC has a glass transition temperature of about 80 degrees centigrade, well above room temperature and it is therefore brittle at room temperature. Low density polyethylene (LDPE) on the other hand has a glass transition temperature below 0 degrees. Therefore it is flexible and not brittle at normal room temperatures, and would not be expected to require a plasticizer to keep it flexible.

Since these plasticizers are soluble in dcm/chloroform, i would think that you could probably test it out by letting the solvent sit in the vessel, potentially extracting them, and do the old evaporation test to look for residue.
