Another method you could do is to put the (preferably measured) dose onto a spoon or glass coaster or something then gently heat the spice so it melts then scrape it up with the copper.

There will be some left on the spoon or w/e but you will get most of it and as soon as the flame nears the wet side of the copper you'll see plumes of smoke.
