The way the image is nonsensical or slightly absurd in the amount of things that are presented as a being, as if this being is a conglomeration of strange artifacts that may be alive as well, on the top of his head and around him, is like DMT.

I think DMT opens up the world of imagination and creativity from which artists draw. It can be intimidating to tap into the current of all possibilities in such a direct way that DMT enables.

I've been thinking of Hermes and Mercury of the Greek and Roman traditions as maybe the European equivalents, representing the access to the imaginative world.

Yes, the Aztec codices are fascinating. The carvings on some snuff trays from South America make the connection (in general) seem even stronger.

I'm not sure there's evidence the Aztecs used DMT (in the strict sense). Psilocybe, yes, and other entheogens.
