I got a question (STB Red Contam)

Migrated topic.

So Swim ran into this problem with the STB, Swim ended up with red naptha that I have seen people talk about. there appears to be no solution to fixing this problem.

My question is
I took a jar of this red naptha and added a capful of Hydrochloric acid to it just to see what happens. It had a reaction and all this white stuff fell to the bottom. Is this lye? what is this?

It appears that the red naptha did lighten a little and I have a pile of white stuff at the bottom of the jar. I poured out the naptha and spread the white stuff on a coffee filter. Ill add a picture once my batterys are done charging.

haha, what what stuff? I'm guessing you meant white stuff. I'm not familiar with STB, always loved a good proper A/B then went Food Grade (mmmmmm, orangey), but it sounds like you definitely crashed something out of that solution...sounds like spice, but I'd wait for someone with some STB knowledge verify.

EDITED:
Oh wow, my fault  , I totally missed the fact that this was all in naptha, please excuse my poor reading skills. Unless you super-saturated your solution, that's not spice. So, I guess there's a slim chance it is, but better safe than sorry. Do they look like the lye crystals? Can you get them out of the solution?

Did you freeze the red naphtha? In my experience you wouldn't have precipitated any DMT out of the naphtha just by adding a cap full of Lye. You would have to evaporate the naphtha or freeze it to allow the DMT to precipitate out. The white stuff could just be undissolved lye sitting at the bottom. DO NOT SMOKE THE WHITE STUFF FROM THE COFFEE FILTER!!! I am sure there are some proper scientists on this forum who may give a detailed description of what happened, but that's my view on your situation. Good luck!

yeah Swim did freeze the red naptha at first and it did like everyone else says and formed a tannish goop in the bottom.

But Swim took another bit of the red naptha and added a capful of muriatic acid to it. it had a reaction and after a few minutes I had piss yellow naptha and a bunch of what appears to be lye at the bottom. It appears that everything just fell out of the naptha.

Swim dried the white substance and it definitely wasn't smokable. and have not yet been able to salvage any DMT out of it. Looks like Swim might have botched a hundred grams worth.

Swim sees some people talking about it might be a bad batch of bark but that is not the case because Swim had already pulled nearly two grams from a 50 gram batch of the same bark earlier.

Sounds like a hydrochloride salt. If you had pulled only naptha then there would be no lye (even if there was it would be converted to sodium chloride with the addition of HCl. If naptha resembles acetone, in that it will precipitate salts, then you probably have DMT Hydrochloride.

Do your crystals dissolve in water? If so the rebasify and pull with clean naptha to get DMT freebase.

Just out of curiosity, what kind of naptha were you using i.e a heavy naptha or light?

The heavier naptha contains larger chain hydrocarbons like toluene etc which would tend to pull jungle spice and maybe a bit of colour.

This is becoming a common problem with powdered bark and STB's. It does not appear to be confined to one vendor, but to many vendors. I do not believe it to be a problem of misidentification of Mimosa Hostilis either, A/B extractions have yielded perfectly normal Spice.

I doubt very much if this is an issue of jungle spice being pulled. Jungle it ain't. Plus an A/B on the same bark does NOT produce anything like this.

I have tried everything from multiple recrystalizations (bestine), to sodium carbonate washes, none of it gets rid of this red contam.

It appears safe to smoke, but is VERY harsh IMO.

A quick A/B extraction on your red xtals is the only fix that I have found to work. Simply dissolve in a small amount of water that has a small splash of vinegar in it. Add small amount of lye dissolved in water, add naphtha, freeze. From red goop to freezer shouldn't take more than 10-20 minutes. Use as little water as possible to completely dissolve the spice. Warm water is best. Your naphtha should also be used lightly. You don't need much, this can also be heated for less yield loss.

In the future you may want to either order whole bark for STB or perform an A/B extraction on powdered bark.

Maybe these vendors buy from the same farmer??

I don't agree - I've never had any problems with prepowdered in a STB. I've even had a mix sitting for weeks without any contamination.

As I've never done an A/B I might do a comparison with the same amount MHRB (same batch) just to see the difference.

Yea....this brown naphtha plagued all my first extractions.....OP, sodium carbonate did the job....just do a sodium carbonate cleaning on the brown naphtha(a few times) until it looks clear enough, and then just re-xstallize the end product if it looks dirty....ask me how to re-xstallize or do a sodium carbonate clean if you need to know....ive been there, and cleaned that
