Hey there , a GOOD few weeks back i ran across some Ikaro videos on youtube . i was struck as the melody's are so wonderful yet unfamiliar to my mostly western tuned ears . after digesting a handful i quickly realized i wanted to make this same sort of music . at the time i only understood that this music was sung by shaman to help people who are having a hard time with an ayahusca session . so to set it straight , yeah i am a total noob . i should really learn more about Ikaro as i fancy myself a "music person" in that i am fascinated by it , i hold it in the utmost respect as it is truly the only magic that I can summon .
this one Ikaro in particular struck me as being so unique
my wife and i make music together using guitars and a drum machine / mp3 player which i assemble drum loops . i got the idea it would be a good song for us to cover as we tend to strictly write our own music pretty much . we don't perform so much for people , its more just for fun at home and then we also do remote music days - in the woods and forest preserves secluded areas where people / five -oh are NOT ... this happends rarely - when the weather permits , as it seems often it is 96 with 75 percent humidity . i have built battery amps which run on lithium ion rechargeable batteries (18650s) and then also sealed lead acid battery's that were going around thanks to yahoo dsl . we use modeling pedals , larger speakers and amps like 50-100 watts so it isnt like mini marshall stuff or microcube , its decent with 12 and 15 inch speakers .
its funny as often when i would play that my wife would mistake Ynes Ikaro singing voice for our Cat - KeetaH , who has a very monkey like chip chatter voice . this has morphed into this joke where i often remark to the lil guy how envious i am of his singin voice , after the track ends ... its pretty fun if you are in the room . he is a nice bushy black maine coon with a skinny bat face . i love mr bobeatis very much .
in any event , i was just thinking today if this would be considered a no no , i mean we are playing this song in our home , respectfully , just because i found the melody something wonderful and when we perform it it does have a calming , graceful sort of effect .
from what i understand it translates " new feminine spirit" which reminded me of kurt cobain of course . the way we perform the piece is repeating the melody via electric guitar with a long filtered echo , i made a drum loop for it , and then added jungle/ bird sound effects . the piece starts with the first run of Ynes singing it one time thru , there is a four count , we play it 6 times , then end and ynes sings it one final time .
i know it sounds like i am being a weenie , but ... i was thinking here would be the place to ask - if doing this would be disrespectful or if it would be ok ...
on the subject of Ikaro , what is your personal favorite ?
can anyone direct me to more information on this subject of ikaro or indigenous music ?
as what follows is in fact a very old story (2013) i should mention i am a new poster . i am new to this forum , to this information in general so please forgive me for digging so deep on this one . i would hope this forum would be leaning towards the more tolerant , where one wouldn't have to preface everything that is more than 24 hours old with an apology , to prevent from being slapped down with the typical internet tough guy mentality "thats old" type of response posting . people treating each other with respect online is something that i am hoping to see happen before my time is up . so with that in mind i have been attempting to keep it in my mind to TRY to consider taking the high road when i am online . this is tough , i am not perfect . i am deeply flawed but i also have a choice and have caught myself and backspaced to say something more respectful and tolerant many many times since putting this concept out there . i feel it could be a good thing .
when i was looking into this i found some really awful story about a medicine woman who was gunned down . at first i thought it was the woman ynes but in fact i was incorrect about that . however the woman who lost her life does appear on youtube videos singing ikaro . its not an uplifting story but it also goes hand in hand with the philosophy that is put forth by this site in that the person responsible for the shooting was trying to start a businesses , doing husca retreats wrapped around the guise of a rehab . he had attempted to employ this woman who eneded up refusing . that is what i gathered and i have to say i very well may be incorrect on that . either way what went down was not good . which leads me to today me considering if even by covering this ikaro i may be putting myself in some sort of karmic danger zone , i certainly would cut it from the set list if this would be the case .
