Interesting question. I guess I still maintain a scientific viewpoint, but I understand that science has severe limits. There are mysteries that science will never, and can’t ever, explain.
I don’t believe in hocus-pocus or magic or anything like that. But I also find the reality of some (not all) of my experiences to be very self-evident. There is a connection between our physical realm and the eternal immaterial realm I’ve seen via DMT, and if we understood “the big picture” this connection could (maybe?) be explained scientifically. For now, and maybe forever, it is beyond human understanding. On one of my first deep breakthroughs, the first thought that occurred to me while witnessing what I was witnessing was, “We (human beings) don’t know ANYTHING”.
Some people believe that “it’s all in our heads” – just the effect of a chemical on our brains. Undeniably, that’s partly true. DMT is a chemical (a very special chemical) that effects how our brains function, but how does science explain the nature of the DMT experience? Many DMT experiences involve visiting other places – places that are incredibly detailed and consistent, yet completely alien. Alien not in a “space alien” sort of way, but alien in an “I have never seen anything even closely resembling this and it’s beyond my wildest imagination” sort of way.
So what’s real? What’s a hallucination? What are we really? Where are we really? These are the sorts of questions DMT use might bring up for you. But don’t expect any answers!
In the end, all we have is our conscious thoughts and perceptions, and our beliefs.
