Though I think the reason folk add lye first is so that they can see it's completely desolved before adding the bark. But if you add a little bit at a time and shake it quite vigourously it will be just fine.
I always add enough lye so that when I give it a good hard shake, any bubbles that form on the surface will quickly break up and this is a good sign you won't get an emulsion later on down the line.
