Is this mesembrine fumarate or just some nice fumaric acid xtals ?

I think its mesembrine fumarate - should it be freebased to see if it matches up to what merck says - a yellow oil ?

a tiny bit was freebased
not a yellow oil as described by merck

There were 2 separate pure products that came from this extraction, still figuring out their solubilities so a wikked tek can be made.
 
awesome - i would like that very much - busy just testing it on random ppl that are super sensitive to sceletium first
 
SWIM is planning on doing some work when SWIM has some free time on sceletium again. SWIM has procedure for alkaloid extraction and isolation. SWIM has been wanting to make salts for some time. SWIM will try with fumaric acid first and then do an analytical test to make sure it is what it is.

SWIM imagines that with crude extract mesembrime will be the major compound but other minor alkaloids are certainly present especially in the unprocessed plant material.
 
okay so this is what i did :

soak plant material in water acidified with hydrochloric acid ( 3 soaks )

defat ???
the second attempt required it but on pulling later didnt produce as nice xtals - but more of them
the first try was with old sceletium and didnt need a defat at all - xtal structure was not so nice tho

i think as a hcl salt the mesembrine is still soluble in my defat solvent(xylene)
i did a few pulls with naptha and it yeilded nothing so perhaps naptha is best for defat here

then the solution was brought to ph 7 using sodium carbonate and 3 pulls done with xylene

first swim fasa'd the xylene - this produced a powder - perhaps just fumaric acid(but it will be freebased to check anyway)
then swim blew on the xylene and loads of stuff precipitated then disolved again so fasw was added and shaken 3 times
evapped to form the final product - just need to find some way to wash it.

previous work has shown hexane works fine.

all known literature has a defat step and the parts of the plant that are used contain many lipids sugars etc.

you can go as high as 10.5 with ammonia and most likely other bases like NaOH and if possible sodium carbonate.

theres no pka data in the literature.

let SWIM know results of freebasing the powder and pulling with solvent.
 
i have a thesus written by a friends friend on sceletium - i havent found any pka data either but in both the analytical and bulk exteractions they pushed the ph to 7 for extraction.
The solvent of choice - hehe obviously - was dcm.
There were no pix of the final product but the solvent was evaporated down at the end so im assuming its a goo.
