I`ve always steered clear of religion and I don`t base my life on what some or other leader say, but this could be very meaningful I think.

I just wonder if the catholic church will make it`s actions be in consonance with the words of the pope.... Maybe the first thing would be to start taking the vatican down and auctioning everything and distributing the raised money to repay for some of the damage done and help projects that build a better world

Sigh. Dude, you are SO missing the point!! And the photo you posted was of pope Ratzinger, the nazi. Can you find a photo of the current pope sitting on a throne? . It takes time to dismantle corruption and evil, and the current pope must swim upstream against centuries of dogma. I have no religion, and no need for one, but if you can't see this pope is a good man, you are not paying attention and are perhaps willfully blind.

Yes and i am sure that scientists will genetically modify a pig so that it is able to fly.....one day.

He seems to me to be an improvement. He hugs disfigured people and sneaks out to feed the homeless under cover of night while disguised as a normal priest. I think that these acts should be obligatory for holy leaders. It makes me wonder what the church is all about if people are getting excited that one of their leaders is atually quite nice. I give to homeless beggars whenever i can but i never get any stories about my generosity published in the huffington post.


These stories are undoubtably doing wonders for the catholic church and it"s coffers but i am hoping this guy"s attitude and comments on an "economy of exclusion and inequality" are both genuine and a reflection of a turning tide against rampant capitalism.

It probably won't happen next week, but it's not really far-fetched. Why shouldn't spiritual leaders get together and ingest an entheogen? it sounds like a very reasonable proposition, actually. If there really were secret chiefs or ascended masters, of course they'd blast off together. Man, I'm just staring at the posts title: it is utterly absurd to contemplate the pope taking a breakthrough dose of entheogens? About the progressive statements made by this pope, i am reminded of the movie 'religulous'. Bill Mahr in Vatican city talking to this bishop guy and the bishop was like "yeah, no-one believes any of that old dogma stuff anymore, an intelligent person can't take this ancient superstitious baloney seriously!" I paraphrase and misquote, but you get the jist.

I have family members who were religious and lived longer, happier lives because of their faith, and I had other family members who were resolute skeptics, deniers of religions and lovers of science who, in their last years, suffered terrible existential dread and end-of-life anxiety.

So he is sort of like a Santa Claus for grownups? I quite like the idea of religion giving succour to the anxious. But anyone who sits on a throne made of gold worth $15 billion, and takes themselves seriously, has got to be one sandwich short of a picnic.

You are talking about the catholic church here guys. Remember their history. Support of most of the genocidal leaders of the western world for the last 1500 years, including many genocidal wars on often unsuspecting populations (they mostly did not get the blood on their hands themselves, but send the military forces of the particular time for the dirty work), brutal missionaries all over the place, complete anhilation of countless cultures and their religious and social systems and values (conquista), surpression of any open opposition in the occupied countries, constant fear mongering... And I could think of so much more...

And they did not even have the courtessy to really acknowledge much of that, let alone try to take resposibility for the damage they have done and try to reverse some of the consequences. (maybe with all the wealthes they robbed from the victims?)
They are really the most murderous association I can think of (given a broader time frame).
And they would have to do a lot more than kissing a few sick people, washing a foot or two and blessing some children. And that's certainly no reason to give them positive feedback.

Oh, and for entheogens... remember that they are widely responsible for the pursuit of their users. In the catholics world view, the only medium to the divine is by a priest and everything else is the devil...

I know nowadays many christians are really honest and decent people, even catholics :twisted: the above text is about the church itself, not about all of it's members. Of couse they still have a little responsibility participating in that high-priests-for-as-much-power-as-possible-club.

Well, enough about that, most of you probably are very aware of all that stuff. I just wished that all these people would stop needing that kind of organization for their spiritual needs and feeling of community.

I dont see the justification of this. Religion has also caused many many deaths from wars spanning the known history of our civilization. I also dont see anyone condemning religion, just organized religion. There is a difference. Current organized religion is dangerous. Seeing "his presence" as a great service seems to me a silly statement. His presence isn't what provide people with comfort, many other religions provide comfort with out the presence of "a great man" to aid in it's ability to ease people's fear of death.

And your statement about your own families experience with living fruitful lives with religion compared to those that did not, without it, is not only a very isolated situation... but is ignoring other possible reasons for their suffering and anxiety. Your families experience with this does not discount the actuality of how people can and have had great long lives filled with happiness with out the need for religion.

Totally agree. The catholic church provides millions with a fantastic set of rituals even though it was better a couple hundred years ago. All that fight against "dogma" is destroying the church. I'm not a catholic, but religion makes sense for its symbols and rituals. Take that away and there is nothing left but nonsense.

He has to find it through the mirror of relationship, through the understanding of the contents of his own mind, through observation and not through intellectual analysis or introspective dissection.
