Migrated topic.

I would like to try some changa with my girlfriend sometime but I am a little worried about the maois interacting badly with her birth control. Im not sure what the chemical is i know that would be helpful, but it is the daily pill type. Are there any dangers in this? if so, there is one week per month of placebos, would that be a safer time to take the journey?

I have no specific information regarding harmine/harmaline, but moclobemide (also a reversible MAO inhibitor) is reported to be free of interactions with oral contraceptives in this paper.

Quote from the abstract:

No clinically relevant interaction was observed between moclobemide and phenprocoumon, glibenclamide, oral contraceptives, digoxin or benzodiazepines.

Looks like it's safe...

EDIT: ...as long as we are talking about the regular daily birth control pills. If that is not the case, or if your girlfriend follows any particular distinct medication, as Pandora reminds us below, specific consultation to her doctor would be required.

No not Corpus Callosum. He does not know your girlfriend or what she is taking. Nor do research papers . . .

If she is truly concerned, she should ask her prescribing medical professional about negative MAOI interactions.

Also, all prescription meds, including birth control, come with paperwork. I know it looks wordy and fine print, but usually there's a kind of summary section in the front. Take the time to READ IT. If MAOI interaction is a concern it will be listed right there. . . .

Okay, Pandora, [disclaimer]: according to what the OP said, we assume to be talking about the standard oral contraceptive pills here. That is, estrogen and/or progestin. If that is not the case, certainly a visit to the doctor would be mandatory.

Reversible MAO inhibitors have no interactions with estrogen and progestin. We are not endorsing irreversible MAOI use with them in this thread. [/disclaimer]

yea thats a good idea pandora, i dont think there is anythign to worry about but a quick look at the documents that come with it and/or a call to the doc couldnt hurt. Thanks For the quick and informative responses guys.
