In Jeremy Narby's book, The Cosmic Serpent, he talks about how extensively the Ashaninca shamans of the Amazon work with tobacco. Their word for shaman, sheripiari, literally means user of tobacco. He also talks about the massive quantities used to that it may act as a standalone hallucinogen.

Have any of you guys ever used tobacco as a stand-alone hallucinogen? If so, how?

Also, how much would you add to an ayahuasca brew, recipe for a good snuff/chew/paste, and any other tobacco related knowledge post here!

Yes, it seems that all over the Americas tobacco has traditionally played a central role in spiritual ceremony, Though not always neccesarily as a hallucinogen. I'm not a casual smoker myself, but I do smoke during ceremonies and have noticed it does induce something of a trance like state even if not inhaled.

One time years ago a buddy of mine took an entire cigarette in one great toke off a great big graffix bong. We tore off the filter and just wedged the cig into the stem. He passed out-cold and came too about 5 minutes later with complete amnesia of the event. Pretty crazy.

(this was a stupid thing to do performed by bored rural teens, don't try it)

You gotta be really careful with tobacco because nicotine can easily be fatally overdosed. I remember a fatal ayahuasca retreat made the news a few years ago. It was supposed that the (greedy, amateur) shaman used too much mapacho.

On the other hand, nicotine is well known for facilitating increased attentional focus and I can see this being a benefit for voyaging.

I like nu-nu snuff in small quantity. It's a mixture of nicotiana rustica (mapacho) and theobroma bicolor (same family as cocoa).
It gives me an extra kick and glow while on aya-pharma.
I couldn't take high traditionnal dose because of the discomfort I find.
But otehr tan that I hardly use mapacho leaves, might rather mix some in changa or add a microdose in aya brew one day but I'm not yet sure about safety of oral mapacho use, so I don't venture in this hazardous zone.

In survivorman les strous takes a mapacho snuff up in both nostrills the morning before doing aya.

He starts to sweat and look generally shitty from it although he claims it cleansed him before the ceromony.

I´m thinking about ordering some mapacho to use when i feel the urgefor tobacco, since i´m trying hard to get normal ones out of my life(use them with weed)

Ive heard it workd ok if you use a very small amount, like less then 10%...

Although i could be wrong since i haven´t tried it.

Also could toasting the mapacho before smoking it make it milder? this is something i always do with normal tobacco to get some nicotine out.

Those guys build up a huge nicotine tolerance, presumably under the supervision of trained pros, prior to ingesting large doses. Look up nicotine poisoning.

A tea is sometimes made from a few of the leaves which is then sipped or taken up the nose from a spoon. Leaves can be dipped into a reduced mapacho brew and dried for a concentrated smoke.

I had some mapacho for a while. The smoke has it's own flavor profile and can be pleasant. Never took the chance to make nose tea though.

I add small doses of mapacho tea to my brews sometimes. It makes the dmt stronger in my limited experience. I have also tried it by itself. I have yet to reach the point where it is noticably psychoactive by itself, although it can make some interesting changes to dreams.

I add a tiny pinch of mapacho to my brews also dagger, and it does increase the DMT I think. I tried smoking tiny bits before I smoked DMT and it really increased it..I am not a regular smoker though so I dont know how much it would effect others. How does it effect your dreams? I have also wanted to try small doses of mapacho tea for dreaming.

Warning to the origional poster. The doses the natives use for hallucinogenic effects alone will most likely kill you dead. Nicotine is a neuro-toxin. Be careful.

hmmm there is thujone in it..not sure how that effects dreaming..I just used it with ayahausca a few times to clear out my sinuses. White sage is very cleansing.

I only noticed it a few times, but I have usually not taken mapacho before bed. When I did notice it, it felt like it was more lifelike. I would think it was real, then i'd wake up and realize it was a dream. I have read a report of mapacho use and dreams, that it made it much more lifelike and coherent. The stories are woven together into a whole much more than your regular dreams.

One very positive thing I have noticed with mapacho, in lower doses, like 100mg, is that after about an hour, I often go into a very serene state, where I am very calm, and while walking outside, I just love to experience nature. There is no need to do anything. Even boring work like washing up is interesting. There is no hurry to be finished to do other things. Just a calm experience of doing something and being content with it. In this state my creative abilities also seems to be enhanced. Maybe it is because my mind is serene and not cluttered with thoughts like it usually is. That is a state I wish I could live in most of the time and something I aspire to achieve.

While in Peru a few years back I talked to this girl from south africa that had drunk mapacho tea 5 times in a ritual setting. She told me that after these experienced she has changed tremendously. No longer was she incessantly thinking. Her mind had become much more serene. This was something friends of her also noticed and told her.

What dosage dagger ? and how do you brew it ?
The strongest mapacho brew I have taken has been 3 gram of mapacho. This did make me nauseated and purged once. It may be that the brew had weakened over the several months in the fridge. However, I would strongly advice against starting at this dosage level before you know your mapacho. Some mapacho may be much stronger than the one I have, I doubt mine was even close to 20%. In fact I have one in storage that had a much stronger fragrance, it feels like it is soaked in nicotine. I have yet to try it.

My suggestion would be to start low, like 50mg, then work your way upward. Mapacho is known to contain up to 20% nicotine and be deadly at 50mg, which could theoretically make it deadly at 250mg...

In lower doses it is not to bad to drink it, but the nicotine has a burning feeling on your tongue, especially if you let it sit there for a little bit instead of swallowing it directly.

To brew it I just cook it for 30 minutes, twice. Nothing complicated. Maybe add a little bit of vinegar.

I have never smoked tobacco. So I am careful not to drink mapacho too often, preferably not more than twice a week. Not noticed any addictive tendencies so far.

Thanks for the advice Frac and Dagger. This is really good info. Nicotine is def. not meant for huge doses in the average person though. (Is it not a tropane alkaloid? (I know its the same plant family as other nightshades)

r0m - I have smoked white sage and wormwood multiple times, and it always does seem to enhance my dreams quite a bit. I attempted to drink wormwood tea once (waaaay to bitter to finish), so i only got about 8 oz. down. But the night after I drank it i had some crazy dreams the whole night through. I definitely think it has something to do with the thujone.

Frac- with the tea your talking about, do you just use it in a nettipot? That seems like it would work the best.

Dagger- When you drank the big dose of mapacho, did you notice any significant psychoactive effects from it? or more of just a body cleanse feeling?

Wow i smoekd some mapacho this weekend and i absolutely love it!

Only took very small tokes and only a very small fraction of them down my lungs, but what a rich and filling taste it had.

Had none of the toxic feel of "normal" tobacco and it actually gave me nice calmness that ive never gotten from nicotine before.

i will def use this as an admixture in my joints but in very small amounts since i felt it was very heavy on the nicotine.
