Cut your used filters into 2 inch squares, obviously you want quite a few. Get a short lenth of heavyish wire and thread the squares on like you're threading a necklace. Scrunch the wire around the papers so you end with a sort of ball.
Heat an ammount of naphtha in a jar in a hot water bath. With the jar still in the hot water place the wire ball in the naphtha. Leave for a good few minutes, agitating the ball in the solvent. Keep the water bath hot.
Mix some sodium carbonate and hot water, ammount isn't important; I go with what will dissolve, if any undisolved remains just pour the solution into a jar leaving the residue behind. Pour the solution into the jar containing your hot nps and, if it doesn't sink by itself, push the 'ball' down into the aqueous layer. Keeping the jar hot, agitate and poke the 'ball'. As the filters become saturated by the aqueous layer the spicey solvent will be forced into the solvent. Poke and agitate as long as your patience holds. Each little bubble that rises is your goodness:d Siphon off the nps and evap or freeze precip to taste. If you have a few filters you may be surprised how much this method recovers.
