Methylphenidate (concerta) and Harmalas from Caapi

Hello, any thoughts on smoking harmalas after using concerta? Approximately 2x 54mg a week (a little less) for one month, the last one was taken yesterday. How is the safety? I read that irreversible MAO and metylphenidate when combined can lead to sudden increase (spike) in blood pressure and is not recommended. What about RIMAS?
 

Using stimulants with MAOIs is particularly dangerous and can be potentially fatal. Using cocaine, amphetamines or MDMA (Ecstasy) with MAOIs may cause a severe increase in blood pressure, increasing the chances for stroke and cerebral hemorrhage. MAOIs may make it possible to overdose on a relatively small amount of cocaine. (A fatality has been recorded involving combination of Peganum harmala and cocaine. Fatalities resulting from combining amphetamines with pharmaceutical MAOIs are recorded in the medical literature.)

Thank you for the quote, just to be clear, RIMAs and MAOIs should be treated as equal in regards to combining with amphetamines?

Hopefully someone will come by and say something worth while regarding RIMAs.

I would try to stop all mind altering pharms before taking ayahuasca. Ayahuasca likes a clean body :)

I do not mean to be rude or anything, appreciate your input but, it seems you have not read my post.. I am talking about smoking harmalas (RIMAs) and not drinking ayahuasca.

AFAIK there are no published reports on the pharmacology of smoked MAOIs/RIMAs, so all you will hear about are anecdotal reports at most. We do not know how they are metabolized when smoked, how they interact with other substances, and we do not know how much MAOIs there would be in your smokable extract/leaves so you would be guinea pigging and risking your life dangerously.

I just read that the half life of methylphenidate is quite quick, 2 hours, IF its the immediate release capsules. In that case, say, 24 hours after dosing the last time should be reasonably safe considering you dont take any other medication or have metabolism problems that make a substance linger for longer in your organism. BUT, if you have the extended release one, the half life is up to 12 hours, so you should be at least a few days, like a week, before consuming any MAOIs.

Better safe than sorry.

In any case either wait for, or directly pm Corpus Calosum, he is the best qualified person to give advice regarding medical issues here.
 
As endlessness has mentioned, data pertaining to drug interactions with RIMAs relates to oral use; smoked/vaporised RIMAs such as extracted harmalas have not been formally tested in conjunction with any oral meds (AFAIK) so any reports will be anecdotal.But, with caution being the better part of valour, its wise to err on the side of caution.

The datasheet for methyphenidate states that it should not be used with concurrent MAOIs (and no distinction is made between types A or B, reversible vs irreversible) or within 14 days of regular MAOI use as hypertensive crises may result.

I think that there is going to be differences in durations of action when oral harmalas are compared to vaporised, plus most of us here do not use harmalas on a daily basis so, with the terminal half-life of methylphenidate being about 3.5 hours, I personally would like to have a couple of days between a one-off use of methyphenidate and use of harmalas by any route.Do note that we are treading relatively unknown ground with our enthusiasm for vaporised harmalas so we must be appropriately cautious.
