Taste the cactus, if it is bitter you should have some alkaloid present.

Citric is tricky.

HCL is easier but requires much more saftey.

My last batch of M-citrate is a little sour and very bitter on the aftertaste.

The cloudy water sounds like M-citrate, citric acid does not make cloudy solutions.
