My first experience

Kadafi

Rising Star
It has now been about 1 hour since I've blasted off for the first time. I'm fairly experienced with a wide variety of mind altering substances over the years, including psychedelics such as strong doses of mushrooms, LSD & 2C-E, as well as other serotonin and dopamine releasing chemicals. My only parallel to describe the experience though would be to consider a strong hit of salvia, several orders of magnitude greater. DMT is not something I take lightly. I've known about it for years, and feel I've given it a healthy degree of respect before smoking for the first time.

In terms of smoking, I took three large hits from a VaporGenie, and without any other form of comparison, I'd say it worked pretty damn well. At first it was pretty overwhelming, but after I'd convinced myself that I was breathing okay, I could relax and enjoy the ride. A common theme I've found from reading the experiences of others, is that any memory of the experience fades almost as soon as you return to reality, and that's certainly the case for me, although there was a large afterglow with visual distortions for 15 minutes or so. I do recall though, shortly after blasting off, a community of small, alien like specimens saying: 'Now you see...Now you see...' mixed within a kaleidoscope of geometric patterns quite unlike anything I've experienced.

My question to the wider community however, is though I agree this substance in particular holds a special significance (especially considering its existence amongst many living plants and animals), I can't help but shake the feeling that it is just another mind altering chemical, and that any real meaning one tries to derive from the experience is somewhat hollow and distanced from reality. I guess in terms of my rationality, I would need to discover some truly remarkable insight, that I couldn't possibly have knowledge of a priori, before I could truly believe that DMT represents a new dimension to the universe through which new wisdom could be derived. I'd be quite interested to hear other peoples opinion regarding this aspect in particular, because it is the one overriding question I have that remains from the whole experience.

The other reminder I have from the experience is the taste. Not a particularly pleasant taste, but highly novel and distinctive, and one I will now remember and associate with a quite remarkable journey.

hello kadafi. your report sounds familiar ;-) i can hardly recall my first trip, and from the trips i can remember, i know i had very profound experiences or visions but after coming back the specific "epiphanies" are conveniently forgotten within minutes, even seconds. for the most part i think its the nature of the transcendental experience; it is ineffable.

as for meaning, i think the main factors which create meaning from any experience in life are are intention and context. it is what you make it. if you are not a person who assigns meaning to their life experiences, i don't think you'll find much meaning in a world of kaleidoscopes and entities. but for me, every single trip i've had has shown me exactly what i needed to see and i come back with a heightened sense of humility and gratitude. they are personalized lessons which open my mind to different perspectives to answer questions and heal wounds. its not to say every trip will share a similar outcome. i've heard of some very strange trips that defy logic and are downright unexplainable. but in my experience, especially with dmt, each trip is a reflection of my mental/emotional state right before i launch... any feeling or thought that exists right before i vape is mirrored and expanded upon in the trip. as such, i come back from each trip with a sense of profound meaning.

i too had an aversion to the taste and smell but have slowly gotten used to it and have started to like it :) i like your associations. i once asked my boyfriend what he thought it smelled like and he replied with "knowledge." happy travels!

My first few trips were extremely meaningful and illuminating, but also hard to grasp afterwards. The more you smoke, the easier it is to recall, but sometimes it is just too darn abstract to take any meaning from, despite learning DMT's 'language' along the way. Just appreciating the beauty or weirdness of what you are shown can be enough meaning in its self.

Personally I have found more insight and meaning from DMT than acid or 2cx chems, but they all serve a different purpose, and as such will affect people in a more / less profound / agreeable way. My mind leans more towards the weird and bizarre than the contemplative. Also bear in mind that the way you approach the substance will have a great bearing on the outcome. Respect it sure, but go into it with a good natured, calm acceptance, and also humour - I feel this is often over looked, maybe the molecule doesn't always want to be taken so seriously?!

As for the taste / smell? My other half says it smells a bit like incense, it does have quite a holy smell to it, it wouldn't be out of place in a temple of some sort. I think it has an ancient smell to it. First few times I didn't really like it, but now I LOVE that smell, especially infused in a bit of peppermint or Caapi leaf - YUM! :D

Great trip report. Like you, I have a lot of experience with psychoactives, but I'm still in the process of setting up my first DMT trip - all in good time.

I'd have to agree with you that it's tricky to make claims that taking DMT transports you to a different 'reality' - my gut feeling is that the mind is a fantastic machine, and everything happens inside there. Does it need to be anything more than that?

That said, I'll wait until I'm experienced with DMT before I draw any conclusions ;)

Happy trails!
