My humble creature sketch journey

Heya,

Since about a week ago, I've started learning how to sketch stuff with a pencil. I had been considering drawing for a long time, but in the past every time I've tried it, the result has been absolutely horrendous. Perhaps because I tried to draw a human face without reference, which for obvious reasons isn't something a complete novice can do with any reasonable success, unless they're a natural talent at it (and even then it would be unlikely!).

But recently some short format content has been showing up on my YT feed from the Draw Sessions channel and I've gradually been falling in love with creature design, so I decided that I'm gonna try my hand at it. I've been putting about 20 minutes a day on average for the past week, and it's been very fun.

Beyond it being an exercise in art, it's also an exercise in patience and accepting the fact that some skills take a long time to develop and perfect. Bobby Rebholz, the man behind the channel I linked above, has been a professional concept artist for 30 years, and if I set out on this journey with the idea that I'll start drawing like him after 1 month, then I'm in for a major disappointment. I accept that, much like in healing trauma, these things take time and persistence and determination, and so here I go. I'm under no illusion that I'll ever be as good as some of the artists on the Nexus, but this is too part of the learning process in terms of humility and acceptance.

I present to you, my first sketch that I'm more or less happy with how it turned out. It started out, much like most of my sketches so far, as a few random lines and basic shapes (in this case circles and ellipses) put down as exercise in muscle memory, and gradually evolved into some bizarre alien creature with an undetermined size. Perhaps it grows when its environmental conditions allow for it, or when there's a threat, and otherwise shrinks for easier locomotion. Who knows - that's the fun of creature design; you can let your imagination do its thing, there are no rules.

I will be sharing more sketches in this thread as they come to life. Enjoy!
