My theory of music

Migrated topic.

Since the beginning of civilized mankind (Perhaps even before civilized mankind) we have been creating music. Music has been something that has been around as long as man itself. In the beginning people used rather simple instruments to create music. As our civilization grew and the technology grew so did our music. We went from banging on lamb skin drums to playing guitars to using Personal computers to make music. Almost everyone in the world listens to music ( Still to this day i have yet to meet anyone who does not) We listen to music day in and day out for personal reasons. But why? Where does music come from? Why does some music just hit close to the soul? How does certain music make us feel certain ways? How do we find meaning behind lyrics that apply to ourselves? These questions have plagued my soul since the beginning of my psychedelic journeys. I have asked these very questions numerous times and i believe i finally came to some sort of realization of the answers.

What if i told you that music is something that comes from not within but from around you? That music is how humans express the world around them? That there is some driving force behind us all to try to make some sense of this very chaotic world around us. That perhaps music is something that ties us to a greater power. There has been numerous Musicians and Artist that accredit their music to a higher power (Beethoven being one of them) That these artist say that something greater then them gave them the ability to write the piece of music. Throughout history actually many musicians accredit a Higher power (God for some) That this higher power came down and festered in their mind the idea of the piece. Could it be that the Universe or a higher power speaks through music to us? That it gives music the power to change lives forever?

If you are one to believe in Intelligent lifeforms out there, then perhaps they make music. I personally believe that music is something that ties all intelligent lifeforms in the universe together. That any life form that has a conscious thought process creates music through their creativity. Really think about that. If music is something that is created in our minds or our reality then cannot all lifeforms create it as well? These questions should have one answer. YES.

We create music in many ways. To express our lives, our emotions, to explain things around us, or to share emotions with others. No matter the reason behind making music one thing is clear. That it is all around us. next time you go for a walk in the woods or sit at a park. Truly listen to things around you. Sit quiet and listen to the world. If you listen long enough you will start to hear music. I am not talking about music coming from people’s cars, cell phones, or radios. But music coming from nature itself. The slight sound of rain hitting the ground, The wind blowing through the leaves of trees, the slight sound of birds chirping, etc…

Through this rather slight listening to the world around you, you can clearly see that music itself does not come from within but from your surroundings. The music you listen to on a daily basis bleeds into your subconscious and allows you to create music with other instruments. All kinds of instruments mimic what you can find in the real world. Listen to a guitar string playing one note. Go through your life and one day you will notice that note playing through a completely natural thing.

I will go into further detail another post. I just want to say that coming soon there will be a you tube channel dedicated to this blog and that i will be posting videos of things that people should listen to…. So once again know your body, know your mind, and of course know your drug…Happy tripping

Interesting post. What do you think about those moments when listening to music and you get goosebumps?

I hypothesize that the very moment when we hear a specific part in a song that gives us goosebumps is
because our bodies are made out of mass/material, and so we produce heat which is a form of energy that can
be measured."Because Sound energy is a wave of vibrations in a material." (Google search for 'Sound Energy').

We are material, and maybe we get those goosebumps due to matching inside&outside energies/frequencies, and that resonates
and gives us goosebumps.

I was using heat as an example for the energy our bodies produce, but I think this 'harmonization' occurs through the energy
in the brain—neurotransmitters, et, al. I don't know much about neurophysiology, but I'm fairly certain that there is a ton
of varying forms of energy going on inside our brain due to synaptic firing, etc.

What do you think?

I'll shorten it down below:
-------------------------------------

Sound produces energy through vibrations passing through material objects.
We are material objects.
Our brain is a material object.
We take in the sounds/music/energy.
And if that sound vibration matches up with our own energy/vibration produced inside our bodies/brains,
then there is a harmonization and that music/sound resonates with us and gives us goosebumps.

Thoughts?

Part of the sensations music can create, must be because of a very physical reaction of the brain. Music contains meaning, it has a mathematical structure...but no-one would be emotionally touched by numerical sequences or other representations of these musical structures. The fact that it comes to us in the form of sound, must have something to do with it.
Maybe, because language initialy comes to us through our ears, our brain is wired to directly 'decode' sounds.

I also believe this myself. There's a music that is in everything, and created by everything. The easiest example is with a shell from the sea. Put it to your ear and listen to its song.

Actually, the 'wooshing' sound you hear is blood rushing through your own eardrum. Just sayin.

Sort of related to some of the things the OP talks about, and one of my favorite books. Since it fits, thought I'd share.

Well thank you guys( ladies as well if there was any) what you posed to me was quite intriguing to say the least. I been thinking of what you all said and i feel i have come with a reasonable response to what some of you had said.

@ I Am Swim: Yes this could be very true. I have known for quite some time that sound is actually a frequency that is produced and our brains/ears are designed to break them down. However, what i think you are missing is sound itself is no more then a pressure wave. Our ears pick up that pressure and code it into audible sound. With this being sad, yes this can be a rather simple and logical explanation on why we receive goosebumps when we listen to certain kind of music. However, many songs and bands play on the same frequency as other songs. seeing as how i do not get goosebumps on all songs i think perhaps a better explanation of your theory is more of a mixture of both of ours. Perhaps, the combination of sound waves and tied emotional responses to aid sound waves could explain the goosebumps that we receive during a certain song.

@ Polytrip: Yes this could be true. However, to say that no one would be emotional touched by math sequences is a little to broad for my liking. There are people out there that find great enjoyment in number sequences. Some of the greatest music composers ever were rather fond of math. For example Beethoven was intensely intrigued in the math sequences that perhaps even lead him to some of his greatest artwork. Now, mind you this is sheer theory due to none of us truly knowing him on a more personal level. I can try to find the information i read this out for you if you would like (i read it somewhere years ago, don't know why it stuck with me so long)

@nex: i will look into it when i have more time to come up with a more personal response to what you have brought fourth.

One way to look at music is to realize that us humans think in circles. Or maybe you want to call it fractals. I am told the Sioux language is about vibrations...

So what I mean is that we segemntize (?) our experience. If you throw a stone in water you see concentric circles. Throw in another one and you see them combine into interference patterns I think they are called. We live in families, family groups, communities, regions, countries and so on. These are all circles of things going from being close to you to away from you. All such categorizations form interference patterns.

Music is all about creating harmony out of different tones. We use different notes to form chords. Music as such is a reflection of our deeply anchored need to define, to map overlapping interference patterns and as such a way to understand reality, or mimic our perception of it. Hope that makes sense of some sort heh.
