Naphtha in the Netherlands?

Hi everyone!

I have been having trouble finding naphtha in the Netherlands. I understand I can order online from amazon, but I would rather find a place here so that everything necessary is at hand. I've been to most sigar and tobacco stores in Rotterdam and they all seem to be keen on butane gas fillers and zippo petrol ones. No Ronsonol or Swan or the like anywhere...

Anyone that's from the Netherlands has any ideas? I've read about people using terpentine or zippo fluid, but seriously I don't want to do that. To me that sounds dumb, as the terpentine contains 95% naphtha and 5% other stuff I don't want to have to deal with.

Yo cyb, yeah seriously and I'm not the only one. I used to live in the UK for 3 years and it was all over the place. Almost all off-licenses sold it. Here in the Netherlands people use terpentine (95% naphtha), but those other 5% are impurities I would rather avoid having to deal with. And yeah, regarding the gas I assumed that's not it.
I find it funny and sad at the same time :p

I'm using "Wasbenzine" , pretty widely available and seems to work fine. Not sure if it evaps clean tho, but it works for me.
 
What's the difference between ronsonol and zippo? I use the latter, and it evaps perfectly clean. Lots of people use it, too. What's wrong with it?

There are different options I bumped into. The prices differ extremely. Cheap wasbenzine vs Coleman Fuel vs Collal Verdunner fotolijm.

I am still reasearching what is the best option.

Are you still using wasbenzine? Do you notice smell/taste effects when smoking the spice?
 
this is a pretty old thread, but I would like to add that I have used wasbenzine (or 'waschbenzin' in Germany) from a pharmacy with great results. I'm pretty sure that the one you get from a pharmacy is pretty clean and should evap without residue.
 
The term Wasbenzine is tricky, watch out.

Look for "Wasbenzine" in the do-it-yourself stores, or paint shops, but be sure the EC code is EC 921-024-6. That is a hexane/heptane mix and evaporates very well. Some might call it Degreaser too, but just check the EC code!

The Wasbenzine from Kruidvat is not as good, it has code 920-750-0, it has much heavier elements (up to C9 and unknown amount of cyclics) and evaporates much much harder.

Stay away from terpentijn, white spirits.

If you make a trip to UK, you might collect
Tetrosyl: Panel wipe
or
Dow: Betaclean 3350
on your way.

Yeah, ack from me too. Wasbenzine from Jumbo (and Albert Heijn XL has the same) is clean and cheap. It is the clear plastic bottle with a red label.

I have had wasbenzine from Kruidvat but found that it stinks like it hasn't been desulfurated properly and I have not tried their product since.

Terpentine is a heavier naphta fraction, it is probably okayish for extractions, but it will take longer before all of it has evaporated from the DMT crystals.

Coleman Fuel seems to be more of a mixture of light, medium and heavier naphta. It is ridiculously expensive compared to supermarket wasbenzine. Collall glue solvent is also overpriced, hard to get and appears to be a heavier naphta than wasbenzine. Zippo/Ronsonol lighter refill probably the same.

Wasbenzine, apart from the attractive pricing and very good availability, is probably the best option in terms of purity. Its main purpose is for removing stains and it therefore should evaporate quickly without leaving any unnecessary residues.
 
Ye, it was fine in the past. 1-2% yields. In 2012.

Lately, I have been doing Cyb's tek with very minimal yields. Not sure what gives. Evapping wasbenzine gives aprox 100mg of spice. On a good day. From 75g. Yikes. Either, bunk ACRB/MHRB or something else is going on. Come to think of it, I have used lab-grade Heptane with only slight improvements in yields. (Wasbenzine probably works fine)

Never heard of terpentine, what is it? Maybe you mean turpentine then it is not naptha since it derives from petroleum and turpentine from pine resin. I doubt they don't sell naptha but you can use gasoline or hexane for example instead which also boils faster.
I'll be comming to Netherlands and I'm too curious where to look for cheaper extraction chemicals?

If you guys in the Netherlands can't find naphtha, I suggest trying endlessness' ethanol, vinegar, and sodium carb tek:


Isopropyl alcohol (IPA) can replace the ethanol if you can't find 95% ethanol. Make sure it's relatively pure IPA though. If you can't find sodium carbonate, stick baking soda into the oven for a while.

There is a mix up of names out there that complicate things.
There's turpentine a distillate from tree resin.
There's artificial turpentine (White Spirit), then they easily leave out the "artificial" so you can have a bottle of "turpentine" (or terpentine) that does not originate from trees.
There's white spirit that is in general a naphtha form (but can also be a tree turpentine).
So you really never know for sure with this non official nomenclature.

Anyhow naphtha white spirit or tree turpentine have quite similar boiling points (indicative) 150 - 200 deg C.
The true wasbenzines (panel wipe) have boiling point 50 degrees C lower than that, indicating a much smoother evaporation.
 
In the Netherlands, obtaining good quality naphtha is no problem at all. The two major supermarket chains and every hardware store carries "wasbenzine", which is light naphtha that boils between 80 to 130 degrees Celcius.

This is what you should look for:

There are other brands in some other shops, but not all are clean and free of smell like the one pictured above.

Classical turpentine, the stuff distilled from resin, is quite hard to obtain, you'll have to go to an artists' supplies shop to find any. In the dutch language it is called "terpentijn".

White spirit is called "terpentine" and is also readily available at supermarkets and hardware stores. It is the next heavier naphtha fraction from "wasbenzine". Again the next heavier fraction, lamp oil, is called "lampolie". Don't use either when you can get wasbenzine.

The lightest fraction, petroleum ether, is called "kookpuntsbenzine 40-60", it is quite hard to find in regular stores. I find that it is great for recrystalliztions, as it seems to be more selective than the heavier naphtha fractions.

Sodium carbonate is ubiquitous in the Netherlands, in every supermarket. Sodium hydroxide can be found in every hardware store.

If you want to pull more spectrum (like dmt-oxides) they carry "Cellulose thinner" which code EC 203-625-9 points out to toluene, see attached pdf

@pitubo: For what purpose/under what name do they sell sodium carbonate in the supermarkets?

@Jees: Where can this "Forever" Wasbenzine be found? Supermarkets? Hardware Stores?
