Currently using coffee grounds with success . Haven't quite figured out how to use banana peels the best way yet .. want fish emulsion but trying to figure out how NOT to pay 15$ a bottle...
whats worked for you?

Look into JADAM and Korean Natural Farming (KNF) for some high quality low cost fertilizers.

An example of a KNF fish fertilizer recipe they call Fish Amino Acid is the following:

Take 1 part fish (dicing it or atleast dividing it into a few parts is best) and add to 1 part brown sugar and a handful of leaf mold soil (you'll need to read about what this is, it can be omitted). By osmosis the sugars draw out the liquid and over at least 6 months to a year it breaks down to a thick, actually delicious and super high quality fertilizer. I've never used a better fish fertilizer but you need to wait for it.

Im also big on weed teas, which is a JADAM solution. It's easy, bucket, weeds of your choice (I tend to use same plant or similar because nutrient profile is already perfectly balanced for plant) and water. Again, you're waiting for this one too atleast 1-2 months but older the better. Once you've waited though, you've got lots of fertilizer, more than youll know what to do with!

These recipes are used as part of a larger system so best to read about it. I share only to give you an idea.

banana can be buried in the soil directly, composted, or you can make a tea from it by fermenting it in water, or you can take it further with JADAM as animistic suggests.
if you can, start a compost bin or a worm bin. worm bins are a better option, though for some reason i haven't tried it myself yet.

i put all food scraps in my compost bin and make various fertilizers from coffee grounds, potato peels, bones, egg shell, my own pee (one i am particularly fond of), wood ash, weeds from around the garden and whatever else i can get. you can often get horse manure and other farm waste for free if you look around. i'm sure i forgot lots of things. most things can be fed to plants. even meat can be composted despite common belief, though i don't waste food. i have not got around to humanure yet, but i will be doing it in the future.

i also regularly top up my compost piles with whatever i can get from a local woods. i visit there regularly anyway so when i go i fill a carrier bag and add it to my compost. you should be careful not to disturb local wildlife if doing this though, like bugs nesting in leaf piles etc.
