need some ID please...

Migrated topic.
I'm going to have to say Trichocereus peruvianus due to the long spines, but they appear to still be near the seedling stage.

It does look like one of these (Trichocereus cuzcoensis):

It's quite fun to get to know the different kinds of cactus a bit although it's very hard at times. We need to compile a good 'manual' for Cactus identification.

Kind regards,

There was this thread Trichocereus ID - Cultivation - Welcome to the DMT-Nexus where Coatl had undertaken the task of compiling some characteristics for identification, but the thread was forgotten and it never turned to be something with serious and reliable information...

It's funny that they were sold as two different cacti...the first pic is supposed to be a peruvianus and the second pachanoi.
2 possibilities:
1 vendor thinks i'm stupid
2 vendor is stupid
guess id'ing cacti is very subjective...

I think that many id-ing properties can be very subjective. And I think it's pretty hard to nail them all down, I'm still an awful amateur with this.

so i took some new pics of the same two cacti, and it's very interesting to see that changing angle and using flashlight makes both cacti look slightly different. But like burnt says, who knows?
Could the second one be a real pachanoi????

I've noticed that the taxonomy of these kinds of cacti is a mess. After reading trouts notes it seems even the 'experts' don't know whats going on. A chemotaxonomic study would clear a lot of this stuff up.

But yea first one looks like peruviana and the second pachoni. Could be hybrids though who knows.
I second that; the more I read (mostly internet sources) about their taxonomy the more I come to believe that some cacti are just variations of the same theme.

I am not too much about chemotaxonomy but DNA taxonomy instead where one can see differences in the greatest detail. And DNA taxonomy is the golden standard today. Too bad that there are no DNA barcode sequences for peruvianus, bridgesii, pachanoi, cuzcoensis and macrogonus.
