Preparing for first extraction, a few questions...

My owl is preparing for his first extraction, he's going to try the Marsofold tek as it seems to be the most highly regarded for a first timer (correct me if I'm wrong...) However he only has about 500 grams of MHRB (Not easy to find in Australia, and we don't live near any god-damned acacias) so he doesn't want to devote the entire lot to a single extraction that he is likely to mess up. So on with the questions.

1) If he wanted to use 250 grams or so, would he simply adjust the other measurements accordingly?

2) I hear conflicting opinions on whether the ammonia wash is necessary. I can only find clear ammonia in large quantities that I don't really want, so will he be okay with washing with the ice cold water? or should I save my pennies and buy him the ammonia?

Apologies if this has all been asked before a million times. This MHRB was not easy to get and my owl does not want to see it go to waste.

I'd start with 50g's. Use minimal water, just enough to cover and simmer it until the water is coming out near clear, usually around 3-4 good simmers. Then remember to reduce that so you have a managable amount of liquid, as when you add the lye solution you expect an increase in volume and more liquid = more solvent pulls = God damn!!!

Don't use ammonia!!! No one does that anymore. A/B extracts usually give a fairly clean product which are pretty easy to smoke as they are, but if you want to clean it up after you have got all the spice out you can recrystalise it.

One more question... Will a plastic turkey baster be okay? I can't find a glass one for the life of me.
 
I really wouldn't use any kind of turkey baster. Seriously I've been there and they don't actually hold what you want... they drip all over the place.

Try find a pipette or something.

Seriously I don't want you using a turkey baster, you hear?!!? I lost a lot of spicey naptha because of that damn thing.
