Purifying DMT to perfection by distillation

Migrated topic.

OK, this thought crossed my mind few moments ago.

Would it be possible to get the ultra clean DMT by vaporizing it, then letting it cool down, and to recrystallize in some sort of vessel (you know, like water distillation)?

I think that with perfect evaporation, all impurities would stay behind, and only DMT would evaporate, cool down and recrystallize.

Any thoughts on this are welcome. :)

Yes, in theory, it would work quite well, but if you've ever done distillation in a lab, you know that it can be tricky, especially for inexperienced chemists, and next to impossible without some kind of distillation rig (which is something that I doubt many people, except maybe Benzyme, regularly cook with or have around the house).

Also, while you might get more pure spice, it becomes a question of diminishing returns. Crystallizing from naphtha after an A/B gives pretty pure crystals, and unless you're planning to go the intravenous or intramuscular route, the extra purity won't do much for you.

Would a copper still work?

I'm not sure what you mean by 'a copper.' If you mean like a copper still, probably not, given the quantities of DMT we usually work with. If you're thinking about using copper mesh for a fractional distillation, I don't see why it wouldn't.

From my experiences with normal vaporization, I’d say that DMT is very sensitive to heat – at the temperatures required to distill it, much of it would decompose/pyrolize before it vaporizes.

For it to work, I think distillation would have to be done at reduced pressure and temperature.

That's exactly what I meant, thanks for the info.
