Hyperspace Fool: I was thinking the same thing, that he sounded specifically resentful of organized religion. And, I don't know, he mentioned mosques along with churches; my impression of Islam is that on the whole it hasn't been as repressive of science as historically the Christian church has. The Arabs invented the zero, and a lot of science got started in the Middle East quite a long time ago.
BUT what I did like is the part where he talked about not bowing down before God. (in an implied groveling sense.) I think there's an important distinction between humility, which is absolutely essential, and humiliation; i.e., thinking of yourself as a "worthless sinner."
