Seem like a good extraction method?

Migrated topic.
That is the exact tek I followed for my first extraction. Use less naphtha than it says or you'll probably need to evaporate some of it before freezing. It should be noted that it says you need shredded bark, this is not true... what it should say is the bark should be *at least* shredded, but powdered is fine (or perhaps it is better). There are better ways than that IMO but that tek works fine. Also, if possible, swap "turkey baster" with "glass syringe". That makes things much easier.

I wonder why people prefer whole or shredded over powdered, if once they receive the whole or shredded they will just powder it themselves anyway?....

if you use powdered bark use 15ml water per gram of bark not 6ml

I have always successfully used 6ml of water per gram and never had any problem. My last extraction was 100g with 600ml water and 100g lye and it yielded 2.6% Jimjam (plus another much smaller pull that I didn't weigh, probably another 250mg or thereabouts). I've never understood people's need for so much water.

EDIT: And it has always been pre-powdered bark I use.

You are the exception and not the rule, 6ml of water per gram of bark will make the mimosa sludge extremely thick and much more likely to cause an emulsion. some people still get emulsions at 15ml per gram. your high yield has nothing to do with using less water it was just strong bark.

With Whole bark you can control what goes in there. Some powdered have been known to have filler or cut with other things. I got powdered and it was fine.
Also someone said they like whole bark because they feel more in touch with the spirits if they break it up themselves.
Obviously it is easier to just get prepowdered, less mess (dust) and work (can actually take a toll on your grinder's blades and engine).

Oh I know the yield has nothing to do with less water, only added the yield to show nothing was lost by using less water. My friend uses the same amounts of water as me, so I guess I'm not a complete exception... also I don't gently roll my container when mixing, I shake the crap out of it and have never even seen an emulsion. I don't understand the chemistry of how that can be the case for me and the only other person I have seen using the same amount of water (and I guess it worked for whoever wrote that tek) and not the case for others. I see lots of people saying you *need* to use x amount of water, and I'm sure it is based on something, but I don't think it is based on their experience. I'd be more inclined to think that if I can shake vigorously without getting an emulsion then it was the person who initially claimed that so much water is needed who was the exception.

I'm not saying he should use 6:1 and I'm not saying he shouldn't use 15:1, I was just stating that it perhaps isn't the case that using less water will result in adverse affects since I have never seen it happen over the course of 5 or 6 of my own extractions and a bunch that a friend done.
