seperatory funnel vs vacuum filtration kit

swim is trying to refine his extraction skills and is thinking of buying some lab equipment.Mind you swim never passed his chemistry class in high school :lol: Swim is buying 5lbs of mhrb and gonna try a few methods (to see what tek gives best yields & quality).One tek he wants to try is: shaggy's jungle tek.The tek recommends using a sep. funnel which swim thinks is probably easier and more efficient than a turkey baster and syringes (he assumes),It also reccomends a vaccuum fitration kit,which swim knows nothing about.Does that serve the same purpose of a sep funnel?He tried googling vac.filt kit and found no useful info on how to use or what its for, only how to buy.If swim gets a sep funnell, is a vac. filt. kit nessisary, do they serve the same pupose (sperating the naptha from the mhrb solution) and if they dont serve the same purpose,can anyone tell me the benefits of having a vac.filt kit? Swim Knows nothing, he just followed the mars tek step by step twice and had success and now he wants to step it up a notch.If any of you old timers would be so kind as to help a begginer on what lab equip is most beneficial swim would be greatful.Much thanx

two different things

a sep funnel is used for liquid/liquid extractions, vacuum filtration is either used to separate crystals from the mother liquor, or particulate impurities from a solution.

both are good to have. the sep funnel is the essential piece of glassware used for the extraction. vacuum filtration is optional, and used at the very end to retrieve crystals

Thank you benzime,Swim is gonna invest is some basic lab essentials.One question how does the vaccum retrieve the crystals? (Excuse the lack of experience). swim is used to scraping his baking dish,pouring the naptha through a funnell w/ coffee filter and let the crystal dry on the filter.Does the vac filter change this process? if so then how?

A vacuum filter is just a way of filtering solid particles out of your liquids, like powdered MHRB pieces from your sludge. If is a lot quicker than an ordinary filter as you create a vaccum in the flask the liquid is draining into, pulling the liquid through faster.
You'll want to do some sort of filtration before putting anything (with solids in) in your sep funnel as otherwise it'll get blocked up and not drain through. I find a vacuum filter very useful (especially for filtering crystals from solvent before they melt), but for filtering MHRB easily and quickly I prefer to use a chinois or cone sieve with very fine mesh. You may want to run through a vacuum filter afterwords but you shouldn't need to.
