Soil for seedlings

Migrated topic.

Gone-and-Back

Rising Star
I just ordered some bridgesii seeds after many months of dreaming of starting a cactus grow. They should be here Monday, and I can not wait!

I have done my reading on soil mixes, but all of them talk about soil mixes for adult cacti. I have yet been able to find what should be good for sowing seeds in, and what they should be grown in until they get a bit larger. Do they need different nutrients when seedlings?

I plan on getting some pots in the next couple days to plant them in, I may just even plant them in separate plastic cups to start with so they can easily be transplanted down the line. Ill also be getting a 6500k CFL to grow them with. Eventually I plan on getting a setup for T5's, but that is not an option at the moment unfortunately.

I know it will take a long time to grow these babies out to maturity, but it will be long worth the wait! 😁

I appologize if this has been talked about before, but I have not been able to find much info when it comes to seedlings. Thanks in advance all.

Great links, thank you.

I am a bit confused as to part of his process though;
7. Now you will want to get a container that is wider than the one you planted the seeds in. Fill it up with water till it is 2" high. Then set the container with the seeds in the container with water and let the water drain up from the bottom till you see a small amount of moisture on the top layer. (After this I will usually let it drain excess water for about an hour.)

What I think this means is that the original container should have drainage holes in the bottom, and when placed into the container of water that will allow the water to seep up and dampen the soil, right? I just didnt see anywhere that it said to make holes in the container.

Yep, cactus containers always have drainage holes in the bottom to avoid to swamp roots.

You'r gonna love those green blobs :)
