Success -- Vitreous Crystals

Migrated topic.

Just got the dopest crystals. I haven't encountered this kind before, but the structure is real glassy. Tried to capture this in some of the images.

The shape is definitely related to the isolation of a compound which could either be N-methyltryptamine or 2-methyltetrahydro-β-carboline but most likely identified as the latter (extremely high melting point; probability-wise too). Though I have no conclusive proof yet, I'm arriving at the conclusion that whatever this compound is, and whatever its proportion in the freebase solution used for crystallization is, is directly related to crystal appearance. The interaction between solvent type and this compound when it is mixed with the others I think is more significant in the effects of crystal shape than choice of solvent alone.

Nice crystals - Nice Pictures - Good Job!
Maybe it really could be 2-methyltetrahydro-β-carboline, what is the source (plant material) those crystals were extracted from? And do you plan to further refine them? If you do, share your results im curious!

Why thank you Th Entity !

Since you bring it up, I suppose I will continue to refine it. It's the 4th refinement so far, but this was the only time I used hexane along with the heptane. I wasn't really fond of heptane until recently, but I used it every time in this series and the damn [tetrahydroharman?] wasn't being dissolved, so I used hexane with ethanol in 15:4, boiling off ethanol, and added heptane, leaving an end solution with an unknown ratio of each. I do think heptane grows better crystals though, at least more elegant ones, so doing one more refinement using just heptane would I think be very interesting, to see where that leads. It becomes an advantage that this compound is so ridiculously insoluble. Acetonitrile sort of gets some of it, and it's not miscible with heptane. I'll probably do just that

This is from Mimosa hostilis.

Thanks for the thoughts!
